Warble again last evening on both frequencies... this thing has to be man-made, a natural phenomenon would not last as long nor be so consistent.
Never heard this thing before in all my time on AM BCB.

Could be Radio Reloj (literally Radio Clock) Cuba... it transmits on a number of AM frequencies including 570.
There is a high pitch beep at the top of every minute followed by the ID... RR (.-. .-.) in Morse Code.
In between each ID you will hear a tic tok marking the seconds.
There is a voice over all of this reading the news.
If conditions are bad, you may not hear the voice, but the RR usually gets through.

Same warble again this evening on 870 and 1040.
No notable solar activity in the last 48 hrs so that can be ruled out.
Can't think of any natural phenomenon that would create the warble.
If it is man-made, where is it coming from and why?

NQC,

This is strange... hard for me to imagine why anyone would waste the time and energy to jam WHO or WWL.
Wonder if it could be some rebel group jamming other stations that just happen to be on 1040 and 870?
This to me is what makes radio interesting.

Hearing a warble on both 870 and 1040 here in MI tonight.
The warble is mostly covered by WHO on 1040 but sometimes nearly covers WWL on 870.
The warble nulls on a N-S axis.
Never heard anything like this before on either frequency or AKAIK
anywhere on the AM band.

Do you hear the station on 1770 all the time or was this just a one time experience?
Do any other of your radios receive this station on 1770?

Hmmm... something odd about this one, 1770 is outside the AM broadcast band.
Does your Eton Traveller or any other radio also receive this station?

This frequency is a black hole for me here in MI.  Nothing to hear day or night.  Of the 40 or so stations on this freq, none are in MI or the neighboring states of OH, IN, IL.
Looks like all the stations on 900 go to 500 wats or less (mostly a lot less) at night.  Will keep an eye (ear) on this freq as the Winter nighttime skip season develops...
who knows, something may pop up.

Thanks for the heads up on this one... have listened both day and night on 900 but nothing so far other than roaring QRM.

Could be a typo here...
Perhaps you mean CHML AM 900 in Hamilton ON.
CKLW AM Windsor ON is on 800.

NQC,

Have used all of the above for audio and additionally have cheated and used a signal tracer. ;)

NQC,

Sounds like you have some very nice crystal sets.
Xtal set here is nothing special, just the typical 1N34 with a couple of variable condensers wired series/parallel, and a spider web coil on a breadboard.
The key is the outboard inductively coupled via its spider web coil antenna tuner.  By adjusting the coupling while tuning its switchable in/out
series/parallel variable condensers (with reduction drives) as well as a reversible antenna/ground connection switch there seems to be some combination of
connections that produces results.  Nothing scientific, just a bunch of components cobbled together over the years.
Antenna is 100' wire with a dogleg in it.

NQC...

If you want to DX the Midwest, try KMOX AM 1120 St. Louis MO 50kw.  You will have to null the Concord station but KMOX has a really big signal for some reason.
Another to try with a nice nighttime signal is KCJJ AM 1630 Iowa City IA, an X-band station so interference should not be a problem.
OTOH, WBZ really booms in here at night from your location as they send all their power this way.  It's also loud on my crystal set.

Addendum... You may want to try KCJJ on sunset skip when it has just turned dark at your QTH but the Iowa station is still on 10kw daytime power.
