Longwave Loggings / winter 2020-2021 longwave season brief summary
« on: March 15, 2021, 2250 UTC »
Things started off quite nicely in October and early November with some good listening sessions netting several ATNOs.
However, things deteriorated around Thanksgiving time when the neighborhood Christmas decorations went up.
These are not your fathers' incandescent lights.  Nowadays it is LEDs with electronic drivers, flashers, etc.
along with the attendant RFI. Things got worse around Christmas when apparently some new electronic gifts were
put into service.  The noise is coupled back onto the power line due to lack of filtering in the device and is then radiated.
Along with the local generated QRM, there was a double whammy with a spike in solar flux in early December. This
may be a taste of things to come as solar cycle 25 ramps up.

My longwave listening habits and emphasis may have to change to daytime DXing from local parks where the LW band
is quiet.

OK, tnx, stumbled upon it Sunday morning 3-14-21 around 0915Z and only heard it for several minutes before it faded out.
Cannot find it in any database, strange.

Big signal from Lexington Park MD in here this morning.
"Your Easy Favorites" sounded like a local, loud with no QSB.
They ID a lot which is nice.

Hudson CO. NJ TIS on 1710 loud and clear signal here this morning just before dawn
with no QSB (probably still on the "temporary" authority) but the audio was almost
unintelligible on certain announcements in spite of the good signal.

66
15 was open again Sunday afternoon down into South America,
10 was quiet... nothing heard.

67
15 was open down through the Caribbean Saturday afternoon.
Worked VK and ZL early this morning on 40.

68
With those Canadians in there you could almost call it a "hat trick".

Caught this one on the car radio this morning @ 1145Z...
Dominate signal in the mix, clearly heard their ID.
Supposedly a daytimer but perhaps on 24 hrs due to
the snowstorm.

Love him or hate him you would have to admit that he did more to revitalize AM radio than anyone or anything else.

Weather / Re: Drama free weather
« on: February 16, 2021, 1058 UTC »
Some more drama here, picked up at least 6" of snow overnight...
hard to tell exactly with all the blowing and drifting.
Shoveled the drive before going to sleep late last night to lessen the
same task this morning.  Would rather try to keep up with storm
than wait for it to end...  don't have a snowblower.
Temps have remained well below freezing here since my last post.
Several minor snowfalls plus last night have left well over a foot of
snow on the ground.

Got to head back out in a bit and shovel out along the curb to
minimize the amount the city plow will dump in my driveway.

Update:    been shoveling pretty much continuous, got things under control,
came in to thaw out and take on some water, this cold dry WX is dehydrating.
Looks like about 6-8" storm total.  The winter storm warning set to expire at noon.
Mostly just light blowing snow at present.
Will be listening for city plow (if they come by today), the street is drifted over,
the 4x4s have no problem, the FWDs not going anywhere.

Well, the plow came by, made for another 2 hrs. of shoveling, time for
a hot shower and dinner.
