Longwave Loggings / Re: Receiving LWBC in North America
« on: March 30, 2022, 2016 UTC »
Have never had much luck with LWBC here in the upper Midwest... can sometimes hear something on frequency
but cannot seem to "pull it in".  My antenna is obviously not up to the task.

This is sad news.
Had not seen any of his logs in the Longwave Loggings for quite a while...
an absolutely amazing DXer.

Don,

My guess would be WNDZ with a brokered ethnic format and 15kw pointing your way.

whatever that means ???

The obvious answer for a beacon on 400kc easily heard at your QTH would be FN at Ft. Collins/Loveland.

However, this gets interesting because this beacon has supposedly been recently decommissioned.  ???
Keep us updated.

Fair signal this morning Tuesday 2-1-22 an hour before our sunrise.
Seems to me this station had a better signal years ago as opposed to nowadays.

Longwave Loggings / tree trimming
« on: January 29, 2022, 1458 UTC »
The electric utility has had crews in the neighborhood during the past week doing extensive tree trimming.
What does this have to do with longwave ?
Well, the annoying S3-4 buzz that has crept in over the past several months blanketing most of the band is gone.   :)
Hopefully the light flickering whenever the wind blows has also been cured.

Longwave Loggings / ZEM where are you?
« on: January 29, 2022, 1452 UTC »
338  ZEM  Eastmain  QC... anybody heard this one in the past month or so ?
Usually a regular in here but been missing lately,  AFAIK not on a decommissioning list.

Longwave Loggings / Re: Michigan NDB logs
« on: January 29, 2022, 1448 UTC »
Haven't posted any Michigan NDBs in a while.
Heard these this morning in the sub-zero pre-dawn darkness... all still on the air with good sigs:

332     PH     Port Huron  (St. Clair Co. airport)
336     MA    Cadillac  (been miskeying as MET for years)
365     TV     Traverse City
381.5  SJX   Beaver Is.
382     IRS    Sturgis  (not the motorcycle Sturgis)
400     CI      Sault Ste Marie  (big signal in here today)

They beam all their 50kw directly north so it should be a relatively easy catch but for whatever reason
their signal on any given night may be weak to unreadable.  Usually pre-dawn is the best time to catch
their signal here.

Hard to say what you may be hearing, cannot find any beacon with ID of OOT or SME.

However, there is a beacon FN at Ft. Collins/Loveland on 400kc.  You should be able to hear it from your QTH.

AFAIK there is no OOT beacon on or anywhere near 400kc.
Was there a long dash after ID (DAID) ?  If so then probably Canadian along with a 400 cycle tone.
Otherwise, maybe a beacon that is miskeying.

Anyway, welcome aboard Todd.  Let us know if you hear it again.
