For a 1kw station, they generally put a good signal into Michigan at night in spite of closer stations (Chicago and Toronto)
on the same frequency.  Perhaps due to the tower site appears to be located on a low peninsula probably with good
ground conductivity.

My experience with QRP is that during a normal day you may call and call and not even make a contact.
However, during, say, Field Day you can make many contacts with just 1 watt and a simple antenna.
So, go for it.   Just be aware of what is required in the exchange as it can be rather rapid fire.

Don,

Just noticed you have a Satellit 750.  It has a fairly decent speaker.  Have you considered using the 750 line-in?

I can hear WCCO quite well here in the southeast corner of Wyoming.. VERY well.. and I've never heard HD Hash on 820, 840 nor have I had the HD light show up on 830

Fairly strong signal into Michigan this morning... did not see any digital sidebands on the SDR.

If you want to rock the house with tunes from say, WTWW or WRMI, just about any
of the suggestions would be a vast improvement over the built-in speaker.
Otherwise, if DX is your objective, headphones are the way to go.

The decommissioning... er "modernization"... will take place in phases over the next seven years.
Not all NDBs will be shut down, about 70 will be spared the ax (including a lot of the exotic "North of 60" beacons).

Same thing happening in the U.S.  Fewer and fewer NDB approaches or approaches that even require an ADF.
Not just NDBs... looks like many VORs and marker beacons are also on the way out.

Don,

Take a look at the MFJ 722B Optimizer.  It does a good job of filtering out the jumble (especially on the crowded
AM broadcast band).  The MFJ along with a set of headphones will work well for serious DXing.

Some more quick tests with the Crossed Parallel Loop under reconstruction:

530 -  I also had someone playing instrumental music.

That's fun. I'm 15 miles from WCCO, so no chance I'll hear anything but them, even with a loop nulling them out.

Also said to be running hybrid.

522
Not as wide as the hybrid mode but looks like it would still interfere with the adjacent channels.

Have successfully used the PAR inductively coupled via a loopstick to various portables for LW and MW work.
For SW, the built in whip antenna or 10" to 20' of wire connected to the antenna jack (if available) generally
will work fine.

Nice catch, their pattern is not pointed your way plus "The Big 8" in Windsor is  between you and Montreal.

Conspicuous by it's absence...  ON beacon 283 PT, presumably SK.
