As the M/W/F 14.213 MHz morning net moderated by W4CBS was winding down a station self identifying as WIDGET47 broke in basically for an equipment check. When questioned about using WIDGET47 instead of an amateur call the operator explained they were a USAF flight operating in the Panama City, Florida area. The exchange was cordial and ended after that. (I verified the flight info details as correct using one of those Internet flight reporting web sites) This was a first for me. Has anyone else ever heard the military using amateur bands without an amateur call?

22 Meter Band HiFER Beacons / KE4TWI Beacon 13566.5 kHz
« on: February 21, 2024, 1626 UTC »
On several different days this week, using the K3FEF/W3TKP KiwiSDR in Milford, PA, I've heard KE4TWI on or about 13566.5 kHz. I looked up KE4TWI at qrz.com and emailed him. He responded with a brief description of his beacon located south of Watertown, TN and included a photo of the assembled kit. I have not heard the beacon direct to my location nor find any other mention of anyone reporting it. Additionally I heard KE4TWI via the Presque Isle, Wisconsin KiwiSDR inter-twined with the ODX and RVA beacons.
*UPDATE* 21FEB2024 2114 UTC Now hearing KE4TWI direct at my location near Charlotte NC using FT-1000D and Mosley TA-53M yagi pointed in its general direction. Wes (KE4TWI) reports after a few days of initial testing with log periodic at home and receiving one report from Virginia, after moving to current location and using G5RV after about one month I am the first person to notice and report.

22 Meter Band HiFER Beacons / KWQ heard in NC
« on: February 17, 2024, 1522 UTC »
Haven't monitored in months and when I began scanning across the band today I heard a "new" one (at least for me).

KWQ ~13565 kHz 1448 UTC - 1510 UTC then returned @ 1517 UTC a little stronger (S5)

22 Meter Band HiFER Beacons / What have I got myself into?
« on: March 08, 2023, 2013 UTC »
Wandered into the world of 22M beacons for the first time yesterday and am glad retirement allows me plenty of free time to kill. Wanted to post my initial loggings. Will have to work on documenting freqs. I'm in NC just south of Charlotte.

3/7 (yesterday)
1230 UTC PIE/B FL (picked a real brain twister for my first one until I remembered Morse did have punctuation - LOL)
1625 UTC RF
1650 UTC RVA
2203 UTC AMA

3/8 (today)
1245 UTC AMA
1253 UTC PIE/B FL
1452 UTC ODX
1637 UTC RF
1638 UTC RVA
1817 UTC WV

Then heard what I thought were Morse dashes in groups of 1,2,3,4 at a time. (e.g. - 4,4,1,1,2,1,1,3,2,4,4)

Later I spun the dial to what seemed like a promising freq and just listened. Swear I heard random dots and dashes (also beeps and boops) chirps, whistles, clucking chickens and mourning doves calling. (??)

So, just how weird does this get?

Amateur Radio / Real time on-the-air spotting/sharing network?
« on: March 06, 2023, 2327 UTC »
As a licensed amateur who enjoys listening to all types of communications I've often wondered if it was possible to use HF amateur bands to share real time spotting information about whatever it is we happen to be hearing. (broadcast, pirate, utility, beacons, etc.) Something to get us out of the name/QTH/signal report hit-and-run QSO rut so many hams seem to be stuck in.
I'm not interested in any form of "net" with roll calls or check ins. I'm open to ideas and suggestions.

Fade in w/Led Zep's 'Stairway To Heaven'. Clear S9+ in western NC until signal diminished some and noise swallowed it.

Last night dropped in ~2200z to multiple Hendrix, Stones, Kinks cuts on unid station at what I thought was 6925 AM but might have been tuned too low. Twilight Zone theme at one point. S7 here. Then later Radio Azteca 6928 AM (show #27?) with bawdy, humor songs and other skits. Up to S8 and signed off 0028z and Radio Jamba(?) picked it up without missing a beat. (do they plan it that way?)
