Excellent, thanks for the response.  I do love the Kiwi system, but am still trying to learn the quirks.

SDR - Software Defined Radio / KiwiSDR question DRM extension
« on: July 29, 2022, 0151 UTC »
Greetings all!

I was trying to use the DRM extension to ID a station and for a great deal of the Kiwis in Europe, I was getting a message stating the extension was unavailable account of the Kiwi had more than 3 people using the SDR.  Looking at the user lists, it was usually just me and several WSPR-autorun stations.  My question is this, is the DRM extension restriction new?  (Unavailable if there's more than 3 people on the SDR)  And do they take in account these WSPR stations?  I'm ass-suming they're bots and in Europe at least almost every station I visited had at least 2 if not more logged on.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for posting!  I wondered what the story was when WNYZ-LD came back after the mandatory shutdown back in July 2021.  I never would've noticed the station if I hadn't been using a SDR and saw it down there and wonder how many folks tune it in by casual tuning.

Via Uni of Twente SDR:  A very chirpy D (Sevastopol) on 4557.61, 0200Z 5 Mar 2022

I hadn't heard from them the last few days and feared the worst, but after reading I tuned in and have a very decent signal in NY.  Glad to hear they're still trying!

Equipment / Re: Any discone antenna fans?
« on: February 23, 2022, 0334 UTC »
I have to admit I have discone envy and hope to someday get my mitts on this: https://titanmissilemuseum.org/museum/ham-radio-operators/  Wonder what it would do for my IC-705 qrp rig.

There's also this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQSC08ej1dU  Not sure if the radio club on the USS New Jersey gets to use the discone on the bow, I think they're restricted to the whips on the superstructure, but hope to find out someday if I'm in that neck of the woods.

One thing I've liked about my discone (forgot where I bought it, had it for years), is it does great yeoman work for scanning.  While I do have various antennas cut for specific things, (air band, 1090 MHz, marine VHF), it's great for a wide range of frequencies for drop of the hat moments.  Agreed the pattern is "up", but it's done a lot for me over the years as a wideband omni, and still serves as a backup trainsmitter antenna too.

Peskies / Re: 8296U

There's some good puns in there, "I did it for the Halibut" and "It's no fluke, thank Cod!"  Was it english?  Considering the fluke moved off into the ocean from the bays not too long ago, that may have been somewhat local.

Other / Maritime mobile net? 8152U
« on: December 22, 2021, 2210 UTC »
Hearing a maritime mobile net on 8152 USB.  Initially thought it was peskies, but it sounds like a legit boater's net.  Reminded me of Herb Hilgenberg's South Bound II wx net back in the day.  Good signal on Chris's skyloop SDR.  (2130 - 2215Z ish)

I was surprised to hear USCG doing a transmitter check on 2182 this morning.  He was too fast to catch which station it was ("transmitter 13") but definitely wasn't Canadian.  Didn't the USCG give up watching 2182 back around 2013?  Heard on Chris's 500ft beverage SDR, that set-up is outstanding, thanks for keeping it going!

FM Free Radio / Re: 87.9FM, 12/16/2021, 0230 UTC, weak, mono.

I tried looking for them on the FCC too, with no luck.  I tried to catch it on the air but it was Korean religious programming and I could only take so much, lol.  One thing for sure, they came back with a better signal, edging out a college station I like on 88.1.  Also odd how it's centered on 87.74, I wonder if that affects folks reception with cheap radios.  Great page (Radio Survivor), thanks for posting!

I'm confused about this frequency - weren't the stations supposed to shut down back in July?  I have a loud one by me in NYC, WNYZ-LP, and they did shut down.  But then around 2 months or so ago, they're back on 87.74, and louder than before.  Did something change regarding the Franken FM shutdown?  Thanks in advance...

Facebook has a group called Non Directional Beacon chat, and on it a gent regularly posts the NOTAMS about decommissioned US beacons, there's a least one a day.  We did have a bunch in my neck of the woods (Long Island) but are now down to 2.  There's also a group of NDB listeners who have a running list of what's heard and can be found here: http://www.ndblist.info/

DGPS / DGPS Long Island, NY

Was farting around with a new W6LVP loop and realized there's stations still out there.  What I could grab in a casual session with Multipsk and no rotator.  When time permits I hope to get ADGPS and dig out the ones I couldn't decode.  73, Jim

SDR - Software Defined Radio / Re: SDRplay RSP2 software (Non SDRuno)

HDSDR also, just make sure the extio is current.  Sometimes I have to cycle through the antenna inputs to make sure it's set properly.  Also use SDRConsole.
