Shortwave Pirate / Phonetics on 6925 USB 0635Z
« on: February 25, 2012, 0038 UTC »
I can only get about every third phonetic being spoken. They may spell out something but I can't tell. Lots of QRM from something "gurgling" on frequency.

I think it was supposed to be a parody of the Mossad "EZI" station.

Very very weak here, I can tell there is a station in there playing music but can't hear it above the noise ...

Addendum - whatever it was was gone at 0000Z.

Other / HAARP transmissions
« on: February 14, 2012, 0026 UTC »
I've been monitoring the HAARP transmissions from Alaska for quite a while. You can usually get a feel for what frequencies they are transmitting on by looking at the HAARP HF spectrum monitor waterfall at:

http://www.haarp.alaska.edu/data/spectrum2/www/hf.html

Look for the bright yellow bands such as those for the chart on Feb. 12, 2012. I can't get the exact frequency from the chart but I can usually guess within 100 kHz from it. On this chart, at about 0650Z it showed a band near 4500 kHz. That's where I found the signal - 4500 kHz. They changed the frequency at 0700Z and I found the new signal at 3250 kHz.

In this case the signal consisted of one continuous steady carrier with another carrier sweeping slowly up through the other carrier repeatedly every 10 seconds or so. That particular signal is fairly easy to find. In the past, they have also transmitted a series of carriers that would last 10 seconds and then move up in frequency 5.25 kHz over and over repeatedly in the range of 2.7 to 2.9 MHz.

Of course, there were the famous 7 MHz EME experiments a few years ago. I heard the moon echoes about 70% of the time.

HF Beacons / CW on 8112 kHz?
« on: December 02, 2011, 1555 UTC »
On Dec. 2, 2011 at about 0522Z I stumbled across a CW station on 8112 kHz. It was very weak, in and out of the noise, mostly just below the noise level. When I first heard it I thought it was sending "W W W W W ..." but then it seemed to go into a plain text message of some sort. I only heard bits and pieces of it. It seemed to disappear at around 0530Z.

I do not think it was the M10 numbers station. It was not sending number or letter groups.

Has anyone else heard this and have more info on it?

Copied OK on 3449.8 last night, quite a good signal at times but some QSB into the noise.

Shortwave Pirate / UNID Station 6940 kHz
« on: June 28, 2009, 2341 UTC »
I took a break from ham radio Field Day operations last night just before the thunderstorm hit us and heard a station on 6940 AM. This was at 0214Z on June 28.

The station was playing old Shirley Temple songs - Animal Crackers In My Soup, When I Grow Up, etc. I couldn't get an ID.

Statis crashes were horrific. Had to pull the plug at 0220Z before the lightning took out the rig.
