HF Beacons / Re: "OK" 3449.9

Booming sig here, awesome! 8)

Very ingenious experiment, astounded that you could use your data to ID a signal taking the long path around the earth to reach you.  Physics teachers far and wide should take note!  And here I thought those time signals were just interesting listening! 8)

Utility / Re: Some more NDB beacon loggings

Nice list!   Colombia and NovaScotia in the same night must keep things interesting for sure, some good hits there!  Definitely worth a listen now and then.  It can be a challenge digging some of those sigs out of the noise, especially when you have two signals on about the same freq competing with eachother, and you've got to wait for one to appear in the space between the other's transmission.    Long live CLB!

Utility / Longwave Aero Beacon Fun
« on: December 26, 2011, 0638 UTC »
Well, nothing much happening on HF tonight, so I dusted off the old LF Engineering LF Active Antenna hook-up. The ol antenna itself has been nobly languishing unused at the top of our treehouse for years, but lo and behold, once fired up the ol boy still worked like a charm and with conditions apparently being favorable for good Dx, I was soon pummeled with more signals than I coud shake a stick at, good for a few hrs fun.  Maybe some Longwaver  out there can explain why the Canadian beacons come in so much better than their American cousins, made for some good Dx.  I'll have to try DGPS before I disconnect the old antenna again.  Seems like a lot of these great beacons are getting decomissioned, enjoy em while you can!

Other / CB bands:The Wild West of HF
« on: December 25, 2011, 2055 UTC »
Been awhile since I monitored the wild-west of HF, the CB bands, but cruising through them today had some fun with what must be some pretty good dx conditions for these bands.  Love the colorful handles, the lingo I haven't heard since Smokey and the Bandit, the salty language, and the good Dx hits here and there (Californian, Louisiana, Mojave Desert and Michigan ID'd today). Quite a bit more lively than the usual Ham Band snooze-fest bantor.   Ch11 (27085khz) and ch 19(27185khz) very active today.

LOL, can definately be dangerous listening to these stations if you're near the coast!  One of the few HF advantages of being in StL, safer on the ear drums!

Even better today on 17919khz, stretching ever farther North.

Korean Air 82 (JFK to Seoul) at 70.24N, 82.54W

Air Canada 015 (Toronto to Hong Kong) at a frigid 79.21N, 114W.  Don't get much more Northern than that

« on: December 14, 2011, 0342 UTC »
Ah Google!Good thinking! :D

5723 has remained active, albeit with poor reception here in StL.
Better reception tonight, with call signs copied Kilo, Echo-Charlie and Echo-Whiskey.
At 03:30z a multiline message only partially copied here but replete with terminology (air-defence, weapon posture, threat sector etc) that I am assuming denotes an exercise of some sort.

Utility / Interesting UNID Milcoms on 5723u
« on: December 11, 2011, 0551 UTC »
Began picking up UNID milcom on 5723 last couple of nights.  This freq is not on any of my known Milcom frequency lists, so any ideas would be appreciated.

Hearing sporadic alpha-numeric identifiers tonight beginning around 5:00z:  Kilo, Juliet, Echo, Echo-Charlie, Delta so far tonight.  The frequency is mostly silent but patient monitoring is rewarded with these sporadic check-ins of one sort or another, accompanied by UNID digital bursts.  Hearing a few rounds per hour.
