SPECIAL NOTE 08 SEP: G2-G4 level geomagnetic storms have been happening since 2300z 07 SEP, and as of the most recent reading (1500z) the K index is sitting at a level of 8. I can barely hear the Cuban Lady's voice on the 1600/11435 broadcast. I'll likely be able to get the number sets if I'm patient, but if there are any new files it will likely be impossible to copy them with DIGTRX until a later date, when conditions settle down. Will update once I've heard the numbers.

Carrier up by 1555, but no audio at 1558. Broadcast started right with the numbers-and-RFTD portion at 1601, without the numbers-only portion. Momentary cut-out at 1602.

10/09/2017 - so far, as of 1618 UTC, there has been no signal of any kind on 11435. Will keep monitoring.
   UPDATE 1630 - Just realized that a big solar flare hit not to long ago, R3 radio blackout in effect.
   UPDATE 2104 - 11635 on now, extremely weak. Weird propagation - MWV on with a great copy at this time on 11610.
   UPDATE 2129 - audio was building during first part of 11635/2100 broadcast, and was able to copy four number groups before that part ended. The carrier was gaining strength during the 10 minutes of silence when it suddenly disappeared. Still waiting for it to return.
   UPDATE 11/9 0352: finally was able to hear all the number groups with some effort at 2200, but no chance of decoding RDFT.

NOTE: I did listen in for the 0500 and 0600 broadcasts for 11/9 (still part of the same "HM01 day" that starts at 1600 and goes through the 1000 broadcast of the following UTC day) but there was nothing at all, just as all known Radio Habana Cuba broadcasts were missing.

11/09/2017 - No broadcasts at 1600 or 1700 (RHC was missing from its known frequencies as well). At 1800 the carrier for 11635 was there (as was RHC's 15140 transmission) but as of 1816 nothing has yet been transmitted.
   UPDATE 1834 - off
   UPDATE 2215 - finally on for 2100/11635 and 2200/10715 broadcasts. Very strong signals.

For the first time in the month of September, HM01 is repeating the prior day's transmission. The signal for this time slot is much improved, compared to what was typical prior to Irma. S9+10, only minor fades.

Shortwave Broadcast / RNZI, 7425 AM, 7/28/17, 1200-1230 UTC

Tuned over to RNZI after the CNR jammer overwhelmed Radio Taiwan Int'l at 7445 at 1200z, and am surprised at how well it's coming in, S9+10 with minor fades to S9. It's supposed to be on its NW Pacific/Papua New Guinea beam at this time, and although I'm west enough to still get it at this time, it's usually a poor or at best fair copy.

Noted on the SDR recording. SSTV sent at this time, weak copy resulting in a not very good decode.
Another SSTV sent at 0236, possibly same image.
Not sure if same pirate, but SSTV went out on this frequency at 0338 and 0340, but was very weak and I'm lucky to have noticed them. No attempt to decode them.

Utility / Pacific utility stations, 13 July 2017

All times UTC. Denver, CO, USA - Grundig Satellit 750 - 1m diameter homebrewed mag loop

Auckland Volmet, 6679 USB, 1150-1155 - fair copy, weak but clear

VMC Charleville QL (AUS), 6507 USB, 1201-1210 - weak copy, clear but only able to make out every third or fourth word

NMO Honolulu, 6501 USB, 1211-1215 - fair copy, transmission sounded distorted no matter how I tuned the SSB BFO.

I also looked for Australia Volmet at 1200 on 6676 USB before switching to VMC Charleville QL, but nothing was there.

The RF Workbench / Improving my loops

Hello all. After a year, more or less, of using my homebrewed loops, I've decide that I need to improve them. I have rather cheap RG-58 cables which I think are susceptible to picking up RFI, and ferrite chokes haven't really helped there. So I need something that's better shielded. My question to HFU at large is, what kind? I'm leaning toward RG-6 quad shielded.

I've also decided to alter the larger loop for lower coverage. I was advised that additional loops was a good way to do this, but my question there is, Do I use the same 15' length of copper line and turn that twice, resulting in two loops about 7 1/2' in circumference, or get a 30' length and turn that twice, so that the loops have the same 15' circumference that it currently has? (And if the answer is two loops of 7 1/2' circumference, will I also need to change the coupler's circumference, currently 3', down to 1.5' to maintain the 1:5 ratio of coupler to loop?)

If anyone needs to familiarize themselves with my loops, I posted about the bigger one last year.
