DGPS / DPGS logs from Belgium, nighttime 20th to 21th of Febr 2018

Bad conditions, I think. Almost no spots from Europeans in de 474kHz Afu-Band of North-American WSPR-stations a bit higher in frequency.

Assuming much less than ideal propagation last night, I am satisfied with the results of my 2ele vertical dipole, spaced approx 100m
Still I find lots of carriers on DGPS frequencies most likely from NDB's on same channel - sometimes even 2 or 3 carriers, just a few Hz apart. you can see that, when using HDSDR software with very small RBW (below 1Hz resolution) and zoom in...

Now I will try to improve the pattern of the beam, because it is clear, that QRM is the biggest problem when trying to catch the real DX DGPS beacons.

Unfortunately Kenai, AK is a false decode... Also NDB "LT", most northern Canada was not heard during the night - so I think anyway Kenai is an impossible one with such low propagation...

Bad propagation - indeed...
We are fighting with better antennas

Already testing my 2ele set-up ... it works great, but just 20m spacing is NOT enough - it is impossible to change direction
However the 100m are doing great for pattern steering...

Here are my logs with the slightly changed vertical: it is now a vertical dipole fed in the middle with CAT5 FTP cable - high impedance voltage amplifier directly at the feedpoint, 2x 2.6m, bottom is 3m above flat clear ground...

Happy with the results - HOWEVER !
The big problem is QRM = stations on the same frequency causing interference. That is the reason, why the simple (but very large) EWE is so good.
It is much easier to make a directional antenna with verticals however (similar than my vertical dipole mentioned above). If you can control the phasing a 2ele antenna of 2x vertical dipoles would be great.

For next night I will set-up such system an phase two antennas towards Northwest - may be this is even better than the EWE, reaching 15db front to back ratio. What you need is a lot of spacing on 1km wavelength.
I will start with about 100m spacing between the two antennas. 0.1x wavelength should be possible to phase without too much of signal drop (because you effectively subtract one antenna signal from the other).
If spacing is too close subtraction of two signals will be most likely almost zero....;-(

We will see, what the results with 2ele steerable array will be (next night)

Ant: short homebrew active vertical - 2.5m long. Not that bad such small antenna. I am experimenting with this, because I want a high output element (the amplifier of the active antenna will do that) for a multielement, steerable array, which I would like to build - let's see, if it is possible...

Great with the new stations from Europe.
To find out, what the condx are to polar regions (Alaska), I watch 305.412kHz for the NDB from Alert in Canada, NU at more than 80deg north... it is the most northern spot of the world where people live permanently...

Last night, I could not hear it. But in the morning I heard Churchill Canada, MB loud and clear...

My logs last night on 300kHz with my EWE-Antenna  to Northwest

Alert Bay, BC looked suspicious, so I deleted it.

I wonder, what I can hear to the East with my 170m Beverage wire.
This evening I will make a recording to East direction.

I checked the front to back ratio of my EWE today with a groundwave NDB signal: 15-18db over a very wide frequency range from 100kHz to 2Mhz - amazing.

305.4khz - NDB 'YQ" from Churchill Canada, MB very loud in Belgium !
Incredible signal - in peaks 20db S/N ratio on my large EWE (20m x 60m x 20m) to Northwest

Excellent - Helgoland again!
The location of the beacon is on a cliff, at least 50m high with excellent radiation over saltwater.

It is a dream location for shortwave radio enthousiasts...

I really wonder, what the effect of the geomagnetic storm really is on such low frequencies...
I am a newby on 300khz...hi

I will also check, what happens even lower in frequency.
At 19.8kHz you can hear Australia... and the russian Alpha beacons just above 10kHz, although they are off for some reason since a week or so

Chris,
unfortunately I don't know a good website for EWE antenna.
However for 48m band, you should use your CC loops - they should work great!

the EWE is not intended for use above 5Mhz, mostly below 3Mhz.
Because if the frequency becomes higher, you would loose the clean cardiode pattern !

For 40m you could use a Beverage also , nothing beats a 2-3 wavelength Beverage, carefully matched to the feedline with the correct swamping resistor.
I made S/N comparisons on 40m using WSPR-mode as well as CW as follows:
my 170m long Beverage always have at least 10db better s/n ratio than my single active vertical
Difference on extreme distance (eastern Australia) could be even more!

Ozy radio I can copy every afternoon, but only on the beverage (5045kHz)...

The EWE is typical a winter antenna used on mediumwave an lower in frequency!
Therefore it was a candidate to try it on 300khz!

Could it be , that multiPSK (your software) adds these information, as the software knows the frequency of your receiver and match this frequency with the listed stations according the database of Multipsk.
In this case it mentions that on this frequency, two stations are listed with different baudrate...
May be check it, with the software developer ?!

Otherwise you can check the standards for messages in the DGPS transmissions...

Antenna was the vertical, for best omni-directional pattern.
Distance is also limited due to local man-made noise, which is definitly higher than during nighttime
But my location is semi-rural and not in the city, which helps
I am surprised signals over more than 1000km  made it...
