Shortwave Broadcast / Iran - Additional Services Monitored
« on: June 16, 2016, 2215 UTC »
5930   IRAN. VOIRI - Sirjan. Additional Arabic service for Ramadan at 2205 to ME, good signal June 16.

Also, VOIRI is supposed to be on 7250 at 2200 in Arabic for Ramadan, but I can only hear CRI's Spanish booming in on this freq at this time.

Here's a YouTube video of the station on June 9, using the Yaesu FTDX3000. Solid signal.

They were back on the air a day after being shut off when Vanuatu Broadcasting & Television Corporation reached a deal with the power company to turn them back on.  They were silent for about 24 hours after spending several days on generators.

Yes, that's what the article says....

The country has "priors" when it comes to the management of the state coffers. There have been allegations of corruption in the past. Other Pacific nations such as Australia and especially New Zealand have regularly lent a hand to keep the broadcaster on the air. But some are of the opinion that this financial and practical support is wasted as the Vanuatu Govt doesn't always want to help itself. Then things like last year's huge destruction resulting from the cyclone set the nation back. Lots of issues operating in that island nation unfortunately! Sad, really.

Shortwave Broadcast / UNID: Perhaps Brazil?
« on: June 15, 2016, 0802 UTC »
6135.2 UNIDENTIFIED. Possibly R. Aparecida - Aparecida SP, but very weak signal at 0740 with mainly talks and occasional musical snippets. I read somewhere recently that it was reported operating right on 6135 kHz, but perhaps now back to its usual higher freq? Daniel Wyllyans - can you confirm the current frequency for me?

Well…..I don't know! I'm listening to it right now, 0750 UT (June 15) on 7259.95 kHz in the Bislama language and occasional English anncts, with a solid signal into Mount Evelyn. Maybe they found a few spare coins behind the cushions on the couch! Either that or someone is peddling very hard….  ;)

Folks,

I found an old Kenwood R-5000 receiver at a recent hamfest....it desperately needed some love! So I bought it and brought it home. I've begun cleaning up and restoring it. If interested, you can follow the series of YouTube videos I'm making on this little project. So far, I have done three videos, with more to come:

RESTORING THE KENWOOD R-5OOO RECEIVER - Part 1
We lift the lid on this receiver and see what's inside.
http://medxr.blogspot.com.au/2016/04/restoring-kenwood-r-5000-receiver-part-1.html

RESTORING THE KENWOOD R-5OOO RECEIVER - Part 2
We start our restoration process by giving the case of the Kenwood R-5000 receiver a much needed cleanup.
http://medxr.blogspot.com.au/2016/04/restoring-kenwood-r-5000-receiver-part-2.html

RESTORING THE KENWOOD R-5000 RECEIVER - PART 3
This time we are changing out the old supplied 6 kHz filter for a much better 4 kHz version, resulting in better selectivity and improved audio quality.

If you have any knowledge, feedback or suggestions on this receiver, I'd love to hear from you.

Equipment / Re: Retro Receiver Review #6 - The KENWOOD QR666
« on: May 08, 2016, 0703 UTC »
Was there an RX-200??
The next Kenwood model in line after the QR-666 was the R-300 which was almost the same rig except for a few small changes. The Radio Shack DX-200 also had a double barrel display but other parts of the front panel were quite a bit different.

« on: April 15, 2016, 2224 UTC »
11770 kHz  MADAGASCAR. MWV - Mahajanga. Arabic to NAf at 2210, back on after txer repairs, good signal, Apr 15.

BUT….

9455 kHz  Nothing heard here at Mount Evelyn for the Mandarin service at 2200. Nothing heard on the Twente remote either. Perhaps not fully operation as yet? Anyone else hearing this??

11615   MADAGASCAR. MWV - Mahajanga. Mandarin to Eu at 2103, back here after txer repairs, poor signal at Mount Evelyn but strong on the Twente remote into Eu, Apr 15.

The Aoki seems to list this station as "World Christian Broadcasting KNLS". This seems incorrect….yes it comes from WCB, but it is NOT KNLS! Strange…..
