Windy sounding normal today, with the usual downward frequency pull on Morse characters . Steady wind dits, TMP 82  B is 11.9

HF Beacons / Re: Some Loggings From The Eastern Sierras
« on: November 05, 2021, 0413 UTC »
I recently returned from a campervan trip in the Eastern Sierras in California. All following loggings were taken while standing outside with the set-top whip. Frequencies are approximate, though should be to within a few tens of Hz, due to the difficulty in zero-beating this receiver when in CW mode.

Desert Whooper on 4095.65. I almost didn't bother to include loggings for this beacon, as it was a given I was going to hear it. My only criticism of DW is that it is radiating so well, that it's not exactly that hard to hear. Not much of a challenge  ;D

Thanks for providing the detailed logs! It sounds like a really successful adventure.

I think DW was not built to be a low power Ditter or Dasher pirate beacon but instead was required to provide solid telemetry from whatever area it is hidden at.

Thanks for the recommendations, Jim.

It's pretty easy to configure a Kiwi to keep folks from parking on it.  It's a shame.

I suspect the Whisper folks donate enough money to get a access password and be allowed to park on SDRs as much as they want

Snip——

Besides the Marin Ditter and Coxie, it makes me wonder if any of the other ~8192 beacons are actually the 2nd harmonic of a 4 MHz beacon.

Somewhere I read that the Desert Whooper has a low pass filter on the output that knocks the 2nd harmonic 40+ dB down. Whenever Windy starts working normally we could see if it has much of a 2nd harmonic leaking out.

Thanks for the ID on that 8191.9 slow dasher -- yep, it's the 2nd harmonic of Coxie. Both were coming in well yesterday and I was able to view them side-by-side on separate waterfall displays (using KPH and KFS SDRs).

STENDEC

Good job on matching the two signals up!

I’d noticed that Coxie has recently jumped up in signal strength. That led me to guess that it was the source of the 8 MHz Dasher.

......a slow dasher at 8191.9

I suspect it is the second harmonic of Coxie on 4095.9

From the pictures that used to be around, the transmitter appeared to not have much if any filtering for eliminating harmonics.

All in all, great propagation for a harmonic radiating out of a poor antenna.

So many interesting and promising beacons have come and gone I want to hold an RF clinic to help them gain some reliability!

Hooray!

Can't hear it tonight as the ))#$(&%  WSPRdaemons are parked on KFS , but will keep trying.

Thank you , whoever did the work!

I’d recommend a few other kiwis to hear Windy

Radio Ranch in Nevada
Utah omni kiwi

Q sent about 10 wpm time is 0228 utc  solid copy..4094 khz

Where did you receive it and what sort of antenna and receiver? What time of day? Signal strength?

Thanks!  It will help others to try to pick the signal up too.

4095.650 KHz  Desert Whooper. Fair signal on the KX3. BAT 13.6  OTMP 52  ITMP 59   PV 1.042 Amps
4102.820 KHz  Windy. Fair signal on my KX3. Slow wind dits. Telemetry almost unreadable  TMP 56   B 11.9

Windy appears to have been repaired and has a strong signal once again

It looks as if a repair mission was completed yesterday.

Windy was back up to full strength last night. Currently about equal to DW on KFS SE kiwi at S9

4095.650 KHz  Desert Whooper. Fair signal on the KX3, S9+ on KFS SE. BAT 12.9  OTMP 63  ITMP 72   PV 1
4102.820 KHz  Windy. Very Weak signal on KFS SE. Slow wind dits. Telemetry almost unreadable  TMP 63   B 11.2

The only way to hear Windy is on a good SDR and that is still hit or miss. I can no longer hear it directly at my house.

Thanks for the great logs! Usually I am limited to hearing just a few here at home. It’s nice to see how many of the beacons are providing great signals in your direction.
