Nice one.  Can just barely hear the OK station here in MI under the Buffalo NY sports talker.

Have not heard this one since early last year.  Tried this morning but nothing...
QRM was S3-4... however, did hear 395 ULS Ulysses KS.

btw, as of this morning 332 PH Port Huron off the air... again
although 332 FIS Key West had a good sig here over the QRM

Sad for the SWL beacon hunter type but probably not too lamented by the pilot community.
For better or worse, all the eggs are going into the GPS basket.
It takes considerably more skill track a NDB than it does to fly looking at a screen.
With fewer an fewer NDB approaches, that skill diminishes rapidly if not used.

Seems that the Canadians are not in such a hurry to shut down their beacons.
The NDB may be the only radio navaid at many remote strips.  At one time, without even looking
at the side number you knew you were sitting in the cockpit of a Canadian single or twin
if it were equipped with dual ADFs.

MW Loggings / WCRN AM 830
« on: February 11, 2019, 2146 UTC »
WCRN AM 830 Worcester MA playing an Oldies format...  never logged this one here in Michigan before last night @ 0305Z.
The 830 spot is usually dominated here by 50kw WCCO Minneapolis MN.  However, last night
WCRN was completely covering WCCO (albeit, there were several deep fades during which the
MN station could be faintly heard).  WCRN is also 50kw but what makes the strong reception here so
unusual is that their nighttime pattern mostly warms up the Atlantic Ocean being beamed directly from me.
Anyway, enjoyed listening to the Oldies for about an hour.

Equipment / Re: mag loop inside garage or attic.
« on: February 10, 2019, 1037 UTC »
A couple of things to check...  if there is house wiring near the loop could cause interference, also if the sheathing
under whatever siding at the gable ends is of the foil covered type or if the siding is aluminum could act as a shield.
Otherwise, just be careful crawling around in the attic.

Well, it would have to be a U.S. AM X-band station.
Almost certainly AM 1620 WDHP St. Croix U.S. Virgin Islands
given the island music format and accent.
Amazing DX... that station is about 2600 miles from your QTH !

edit:  Taking a closer look at this DX, it looks like it may have been a grey line
propagation event.  What would be interesting to know is whether the
station was on daytime power or had switched to nighttime power.
Either way a nice DX catch !

Equipment / Re: Advice on Tecsun vs Sony

Welcome back to SWLing.
Have a PL-600 here, have been quite happy with it.
IMHO, a lot of radio for the money.
What ever you finally decide upon, make sure that it can receive SSB and has provision for
connecting an external antenna (usually a 1/8" antenna jack on the portables).
Let us know what you finally get and how it works out.

235  9H  La Grande 3  QC and 332  YFM  La Grande 4  QC  both with good sigs here this morning.
YFM especially loud, covering QT Thunder Bay ON also on 332.
These beacons are associated with airports located near Hydro-Quebec generating stations,
looks like a massive project.

That little loop does an amazing job.

Nighttime pattern of KKOB is at right angle and away from you, would be very difficult to pull it out from under WABC.
Your only hope would be to null out the NY station with the loop and try to catch the NM station before it changes to night pattern...
now is the time of year to try it with low static level and weak D-layer.

CFCO reduces power and pattern at night.  So, if you heard them at night, see if you can DX them daytime.

I have logged YVZ this season.  Tight filter or SDR helps.  YAQ was last logged April 2018, and is possibly a goner.

OK, tnx for the info.

Storm noise from the south has made things difficult to say the least.  We need a good Polar Vortex to flush all these nasties away.

JF,

Well, the jet stream has pulled that polar vortex down here.  Temps may not get above 0 next couple of days.  Just took a short walk, didn't think a southwest wind could feel so cold.
However, presently looks like no lightning hits anywhere in the country.

Anyway, have you ever logged 200 YAQ or 201 YVZ in ON ?  AFAIK YAQ may be off the air.  201 YVZ Deer Lake has been impossible to copy here because of the competition from YKX and ZXU (both of those are also Ontario beacons on the same freq).
Need to log YAQ and YVZ for "worked all Ontario".
