A Father's Day Weekend Contemplation

I was always curious on why people began their hobby of listening to the radio.  For me, I grew up in a brick 2-family in New York's borough of Queens (much like the opening segment of "All in the Family").  As the oldest of 5 kids in the 1960's with 1 TV, waiting my "turn" for the TV was a hinderance to following baseball.  I decided to pick up a transistor to listen to the Yanks and Mets. Baseball was far more enjoyable on the radio, plus the radio could travel with me.

I soon learned I could pick up every team east of the Mississippi plus the Twins. Ah, DXing and I didn't even know it....wrote to every station I picked up.  For Christmas 1970, my parents picked me up a multi-band radio (no, not a T/O) and the rest, as they say, is history.....

Excellent signal

2222z Usual delightful Greek music, perfect accompiant for staring at rolling New England hills from my front porch on the best evening of the year.  OM in between selections.

I was surprised to be able to pick up the match at work in a more industrial area than home with the PL-600 leaning against a window, its wire dangling out the window.  Excellent reception, in Spanish (No reception on 15550 which is always superior at home).

1830z Time pips into "Copa Europa"  "Hola...."  2 OM's doing pre-game.  Occasional cut-ins to live music in stadium
1855z National Anthems of Turkey and Spain, respectively.
1900z Kickoff
1922 "Twenty-two minutes played" in Spanish
1934z Goal, Spain 1-0.
1936z Goal, Spain 2-0.
1947z Halftime

Time to pack up work for Father's Day weekend.

I did hear the BBC broadcast England and Northern Ireland matches over the weekend.  I am thinking that 1300z with England or 1600z with Northern Ireland could be possibilities on Thursday.

I am thinking that any UK squad (England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, or Wales) competing on weekends will be covered plus knock out round matches on weekends.

Fair signal plus noise

This was a surprising find, the time/frequency is only a weekend transmission.  This must be a special added transmission for the Cup Match - in Spanish.

1420z Two excited OM's describing a save by the Spanish keeper.
1431z OM's describing a failed bicycle kick attempt.
1435z Reception vastly improved - substitution by Spain
1441z Goal (heard 30-60 seconds ahead of TV coverage), Spain up 1-0 3 minutes to play
1445z Match over

Wonder if the BBC will pick up Ireland match at 1600z?
