Equipment / Re: Horizontal Loop Antenna Experiments
« on: August 22, 2017, 2243 UTC »
Thanks, Chris. There's still some fiddling (err....I mean "experimenting") to do on this new one. The initial tests have been quite positive, so it looks like I'll be sticking with it and doing some further research. So, thanks for the inspiration from your initial blog post of 2012. Google is a wonderful resource!! Cheers, mate!

Equipment / Horizontal Loop Antenna Experiments
« on: August 22, 2017, 1012 UTC »
Manmade noise levels have increased dramatically at my place in the past six months. It has suddenly become much harder to hear weaker shortwave signals. Even the stronger stations are getting covered in all types of hash from all manner of electrical appliances.

So, I have been looking at ways to reduce the noise problem. I'm currently researching several possible solutions, including trying a different antenna. The HF horizontal loop has been around for many years now, but it's a new antenna for me. I've never had a need to try one.....until now! There is documentation out there praising this antenna's low noise capabilities. So, it's time to find out for myself and get to building an experimental version. The results have been quite pleasing, so far!

In a YouTube video I have prepared, I discuss the reasons for looking at this antenna, its design, and its installation. I also do some on-air comparisons of my rectangular (!) version of the horizontal loop against my three regular double bazooka (coax) dipoles and the Par SWL End-Fed antenna. Oh, and Chris Smolinski gets a mention, too! I hope you find this video of interest. Here's the link:

17860   TAJIKISTAN. Voice of Khmer M'Chas Srok - Dushanbe. Very weak signal at s/on 1130 with a long talk in the Khmer language. Faded out by 1140 - this is a tough one with winter nights and low sunspots both conspiring against any sort of signal into Mount Evelyn! Schedule is Sun and Tues only. Aug 13.

Both 5020 and 9545 kHz for SIBC - Honiara are currently off air, as noted by Ron Howard (CA) yesterday and myself tonight (at 1015 UTC). Hoping this is just technical issues and not something more permanent!

At Mount Evelyn (south-eastern Australia), 5985 was very good, 6035 started fair but improved towards the end, and 7360 was barely audible and unusable. Actually, I thought 7360 ASC would have been better than it was – it’s almost an all darkness path from ASC to Mt Evelyn. The short path takes it south, skimming the Antarctic coastline, along the southern Antarctic Ocean and up near Tasmania. But not to be – perhaps there was some absorption near the polar region.
……Oh, and the neighbour’s TV was coming in very strongly as well this morning…..until they went off to work at 2150!  🙁

This would appear to be an error, Chris. As of today's listening, it was still R. Habana with its usual international service. Strange!

The shortest day of the year is coming up this week in southeastern Australia. Afternoon reception (from midday local time) on the 31mb is great! The link below is a video I made, showing how quiet it is in the bush, and enabling us to hear some of the weakest signals.

Shortwave Broadcast / Vietnam not in English at 1100 UTC!
« on: June 09, 2017, 1206 UTC »
7285 VIETNAM. VoVietnam - Son Tay. Laotian service noted at 1110 with mainly talk until 1128 when a Vietnamese pop ballad. EiBi is listing this as English at 1100-1130, and even the VoV website schedule says this! But not the case on June 9. Laotian running till 1157, then dead air till 1200 when it changes into French. Poor signal here. The service is targeted to Laos, Thailand and Cambodia.
