HF Beacons / Re: 14398.4 Beacon
« on: March 10, 2025, 1707 UTC »
Looks to be around 13 WPM. And as of 1700 UTC today, both 7199.2 & 14398.4 are still active. The 14 MHz station sometimes sends at times the 7 MHz doesn't, so these must be two separate stations, although at times, they both send the same message, too.

If it is not sending a Ham call sign as part of the message I guess we can call it a pirate beacon. I'll try to catch it tomorrow using the home radios and some SDRs. Do you have a recording or a full transcription of the messages? What is the speed of the CW?
---
Can't recall the WPM right off. The following is from a poster on UDXF, who had a much better signal than me:

Just copied the 3/6/2025, 17:30, 7199.2 CW message:
Very strong here in Mass.

; ; ; MESSAGE NUMBER 615,
TEMPERATURE 6,
BATTERY 13.2 ARMED PER 114,
TEMP 1 2.3,
TEMP 2 0.6,
TEMP 3 6.1,

OK, a correction, I'm also seeing this on 7199.2 (half of 14398.4) in CW mode. It's a much stronger signal there compared to 14398.4. The station is sending message number, battery voltage & temperature at the top of each hour & 30 minutes after. I'm not sure this should actually be called a beacon, so if the thread should be moved, have at it. BTW, I'm in southcentral KY & I'm using a Wellbrook ALA1530LNP NA loop antenna & a RFSpace CloudSDR.

Presumed MARS net.  Sounds like 8th Air Force Wing.  Multiple stations stations checking into net.  Good signals.  At 0220z, digital traffic.
Prefix is AFA
Abbreviated callsigns:
8MJ
8BS
8GJ
8WH
8FB
Multiple instances of digital traffic being passed between the various station.
---
Not 8th AF related, simply MARS stations in Region 8. The regions are based on the FEMA regional plan.

Actual voice calls would be AAT0SJ & AAR0SJ. Both are Region 10 US Army MARS stations, but I have no idea on their exact location.

This is a FEMA network. Net control is NNA5HF.

I tuned in to casual conversation about property drainage before officially seeking check-ins, then having heard a few, then sent digital traffic. Some traffic or other digital transmissions followed. After the initial flurry of activity, there was a lot of dead air (several minutes at a time) between net control transmissions and I did not stay with it.

Recording, including digital traffic: https://voca.ro/146vc7jT8ims

More info on SHARES: https://www.cisa.gov/resources-tools/programs/shared-resources-shares-high-frequency-hf-radio-program

Heard on the K1VL SDR in Vermont, USA.

SHARES is actually a NCC (National Coordinating Center for Communications) program, not a FEMA net, although some FEMA stations do participate. The frequency should also be 6765.0, not 6965.0 & the digital mode heard is MT63-1KL.

6910.0 is used by both US Army MARS (USB voice, ALE & 110A encrypted data) & the NCC SHARES program (USB voice, Olivia & MT63-1KL data).
