FM DX Loggings / Unknown skip on 88.5 and 88.1 MHz, central md
« on: June 30, 2015, 0037 UTC »
Sounded like at least two stations trying to edge in on Wamu (88.5) and wypr (88.1).  Was a jumbled mess with strong fades so was unable to Id the culprit.

Folk singing? Fading in and out.  Wife just hears the static.

This isn't well thought out but....could some way to illustrate propagation be added to the shortwave schedule app?

Well and behold...it's working again.  Odd.

Equipment / Cleaning circuit board in YB 400?
« on: June 22, 2015, 0343 UTC »
When packing up my YB 400 for a trip to the hills, I noticed that the alkaline batteries had corroded and left a fair amount of salt in the battery compartment.  I tossed the batteries, dusted out the compartment, and put new batteries in.  I used the radio all day Sat, and it worked wonderfully.

Sunday morning, however, the bottom row of keys would only be recognized as "6", and the other keys were also jumbled up.  I opened her up and cleaned all the button contacts (finding a few flakes of salt here and there).  Put it back together and things are still wonky.  I suspect a bit of the battery salt has deposited somewhere I can't see, liquified in the high humidity, and is shorting something out.

I'm thinking a good cleaning of the circuit board might be the next step.  What are thoughts on using crc spray vs distilled water & isopropanol?  My thought is that distilled water would be the best at dissolving any leftover battery salt, but getting water off the board afterwards would be a pain (hence the alcohol)

Software / Re: recommend me some data mode software

Gnu radio....but the learning curve is more like a learning cliff....

Just wondering if there were any pseudo-local folks interested in a PCR-1000; probably going to ask $200 plus shipping since it doesn't have a DSP.  Would like it to go to a good radio-loving home rather than ebay.

Time to finally invest in a SDR......

Any updates?  I'm curious how well sdrdx works with the afedri (particularly the dual one....)

Is anyone trying to match impedance, or just connecting direct to coax w/out?  I'm particularly interested in the BOG.....

Software / What Radio related software would YOU like to see?
« on: September 27, 2014, 1417 UTC »
Amen to that.  I would have bought into a WinRadio years ago if they weren't...ahem..."win".

How about direct sdr control and qrss in multimode?

Break out the tin foil!!

Could some explain why most RTLSDR software that displays frequency/signal/time data is limited to a couple of MHz in the frequency domain while something like rtl_power can sample across a much larger swath of bandwidth (granted not displaying in real-time)?  I think rtl_power breaks up the sampled frequency into chunks, but is it sampling these simultaneously?  If so...why doesn't software like gqrx let you do that?

SDR - Software Defined Radio / Re: Afedri dual channel receivers
« on: September 05, 2014, 0254 UTC »
I'm tempted by the dual receiver simply on the cost per unit basis (hey, only $100 for another SDR!) but in all likelihood would simply use one receiver on my H-800 and the other on my (eventual) skyloop.  If that's the case then an antenna switcher is lots cheaper....
