That's a shame.  Deep down inside I was always hoping that HAARP would do another HF experiment like they did early on in the facility's existence, and they would hand out QSL cards again.  Always wanted a HAARP QSL card.  Looks like it's not going to happen after all.

HAHAHAHA!

I've seen pics.  The smell was reportedly so bad people were hoping for the rapture.

Perhaps they were just able to DF him down?

What it says on the tin.  Repeats "WLO" in Morse followed by four long tones.  Signal is booming loud and clear, but strongest on 8421 rather than 8420.

Could someone be so kind as to describe (a WAV or video would be just grand) what the HAARP transmitter usually sounds like?  I'd like to try to pick it up as well.  I've tried searching online for such a video or sound file but all I can find are videos from loons attributing every chirp and warble to HAARP, or raving about "ULF" transmissions and other assorted silliness.

HAARP uses many waveforms.  The most common mode is what looks like a simple dead carrier with a very slight modulation on it.  Last night modulation lines on 50 Hz and 360 Hz were noted.  At least the 50 Hz appears intentional, I suppose the 360 Hz could be 60 Hz mains hum, but it really does not look like it.

Some of the more interesting modes are sweeping and stepping tones.  Two nights ago it produced an LFMCW signal that I had not seen before.  LFMCW is what is used by most HF OTHRs, so they may have been doing some kind of radar like experiment.

Examples of some HAARP waveforms here:

T!

Excellent!  Now that I know what to listen for, I'll keep an ear out when I see something on the waterfall.  Thanks.

0154 ID RADIO RONIN
0155 An ACDC song (ETA "She's Got the Jack"?)
0200 bad fading at this point; sounds Boston-y maybe?
0204 next song...don't recognize it (ETA Badfinger?)  (EATA Alice Cooper, "Gotta Get Outta Here")
0211 next song, don't recognize it; buried in local interference
0218 ID RADIO RONIN
0218 The Beatles, "A Day In The Life"...sounds like an instrumental cut?
0222 next song, buried in static; severe local interference now, too difficult to copy.
0227 sign off

Great show, thanks

General Radio Discussion / Re: Anonymous

- Anonymous is not petty.
- Anonymous has always acted in the best interests of the public as a whole.

Not really true.  Harassing the little girl who posted a profanity-laced video on YouTube was both petty and not in anyone's best interest.  Same with the occasional DDOSing of Internet video game sites like "hello kitty online" or whatever; not sure what greater good that served.

Anonymous are a bunch of adolescents who do things for kicks.  Declaring them to be terrorists and declaring them to be heroic public servants are two opposite swings of the same mistaken pendulum.

However, in recent weeks, Anonymous has taken down the Department of Justice and CIA websites and hacked into the Syrian president's email. Is this future power play really so far-fetched?

Yes.

Public websites and web-based email are by nature vulnerable to "attacks".  Claiming that Anonymous DDOSing a couple of public websites is a potential prelude to being able to do things like shutting off a power grid is like claiming that if a person is able to deface a the facade of a bank with spray paint it's "only a matter of time" before they'll be able to break into the bank's vault.

Yes that's exactly what it was - mystery solved!  I wouldn't mind trying to find out who exactly was using it or where from, but unfortunately such is beyond my technical capability as of yet.

Does anybody else hear a strong, pulsing beacon between 4540 and 4550 khz?  I don't scan this band often so it may be something normal that I just don't recognize.  Been hearing it pretty steady since I first tuned this frequency around 0520u.

Equipment / Re: What Radio Did you start your listening hobby with?
« on: February 19, 2012, 0234 UTC »
Back in the 90's, I became very interested in radio as a kid after hearing a numbers station on a friend's handheld Uniden during a camping trip; unfortunately I was only able to buy myself a receiver two years ago. A Grundig G6, which picked me up some Capt Morgan and Wolverine Radio this very evening.
