« on: December 18, 2011, 0832 UTC »
12/18/11, 6925 USB, 0150z: Kids talking and singing, just barely audible here so unable to ID anything.  Off or faded out after about 15 minutes.

12/15/11, 6925 LSB, 0640-0650z: Briefly heard some rock/pop music (vaguely familiar, can't place it), possible ID but muffled.  Audio and signal very similar to Turtle Head Radio heard on 6930 LSB tonight.

North American Shortwave Pirate / Turtle Head Radio 6930 LSB
« on: December 15, 2011, 0637 UTC »
12/15/11, 6930 LSB, 0618z: Tom Petty; song with banjo, didn't recognize singer or song; Thomas Dolby "Blinded Me With Science"; audio clip "This is rock and roll radio with the Ramones"; The Cure "Killing An Arab".
0633z: "You have been listening to..." ID, but muffled.  Then off. (Note: Checked my recording later - definite ID as Turtle Head Radio.)

SINPO=32433, occasional clear peaks to around S7, lots of fades to noise level, fighting through my usual heavy local RFI.  Audio sounded a bit distorted or overdriven, but hard to be sure with my local RFI.

Thanks for the show!  I have an audio clip available if you'd like an air  check.

Recordings:
ID only, barely audible

13 minute recording, pretty good overall.

0652z: Back, heard ID that sounded like "Turtle Head Radio"?  Much weaker and faded out completely by 0705z, while other listeners report much stronger signal (per IRC).

12/13/11, 6930.2 AM: This log is just about useless because I forgot to take notes or even look at the clock.  But it was roughly between 0300-0500z.  Heard some oddities including repetition of woman saying something about "mothers and daughters", along with frequent CW which, unfortunately, I can't copy by ear.

Ring a bell with anyone?   ???

12/7/11, 7290 LSB, approx 1600-1730z: Been listening to Oklahoma based WW2OK special event station (Pearl Harbor, Dec 7, 1941 memorial).  Around 1715z heard K5OSA at S9 on my indoor antenna, said he was running QRP portable, around 10 watts.  That's approx 180 miles from me.  His signal was actually a bit louder than net control's, and louder than most of the other stations I've heard during check ins late this morning.

Amusingly - at least from a listener's perspective - the net controller says it's darned cold inside the submarine USS Batfish in Muskogee, OK, from which the net control station is operating this week.

But they're generating some regular contacts and midday regional propagation seems good for 40m.  Net control and most stations checking in are hovering from S1-S9+ with roller coaster fades here at home on the indoor fugloop.

12/2/12, 6925 USB, 1307z-1345z: Radio Ga-Ga, Shakin' All Over, Fever, Light My Fire - Jose Feliciano, a couple others I didn't note.  Peaked around 1330z, then faded or off after 1345z.
SINPO=32432, main problem was extremely heavy local noise

General Radio Discussion / A belated salute to Bob Arnold, N2JEU
« on: November 28, 2011, 1845 UTC »
While reviewing the availability of various web controlled receivers I discovered that Bob Arnold, N2JEU, died this summer at age 58.

Bob Arnold's web controlled Icom R75 in New York was one of the best online.  I lurked on that receiver quite a bit in 2006-2007, which finally motivated me to dig my shortwave receivers out of the closet and get back into the SWL hobby.  In fact, the first fall 2007 weekend after setting up my old Uniden Bearcat DX1000 (now the late DX1000 - it died in 2008), I heard Sycko Radio, Wolverine Radio and WTCR.  I was hooked.

I'd also registered on the original DX Tuners, which I think was the brainchild of Kelly Lindman, 5B4AIT.  After DX Tuners shut down, and before GlobalTuners was launched by Ivo Smits, during the interim Bob Arnold's Icom R75 was the best thing going for N. American SWLs and DXers.

Besides featuring an easy to operate interface (developed by Bob himself, if I'm recalling correctly), and a top notch receiver, Bob also provided an excellent outdoor antenna in a quiet location.  I recall at one point a few years ago he switched from a popular brand sloper to a vertical, which wasn't as quiet but did seem to pull in a better variety of DX.  I was able to hear the annual Radio St Helena broadcasts and several European pirates using Bob's receiver, as well as some daytime N. American pirate broadcasts that I'd never been able to catch at home on my own receiver.

Unfortunately no good deed goes unpunished.  Bob made the R75 freely available, without requiring registration.  After a handful of people abused access to the receiver Bob posted generalized warnings that he might shut down the receiver.  The last straw came during a weather emergency when Bob's requests to give priority to the amateur radio emergency nets were ignored.  In 2010 he locked down the receiver to listen-only mode to whatever frequency it happened to be tuned to.

My sincere condolences to Bob's family and friends.  I'm glad I didn't procrastinate in 2010 in sending Bob an e-mail thanking him for having provided a terrific service for radio listeners.

North American Shortwave Pirate / WPOD 6935 USB
« on: November 27, 2011, 0316 UTC »
11/27/11, 6935 USB, 0305z: Only caught tail end of show with clear WPOD sign-off ID, while walking outside with portable.

11/26/11, 6925 USB, 0242-0252z: Heard a few minutes of "Bend Me, Shape Me", Gumby sound bits, some song about Gumby being dead.  Suddenly off around 0252z.  Pretty good signal here for 10 minutes, punching through the usual heavy local RFI.

0258z: Back, picking up with end of Gumby is dead song, into Devo "Blockheads"

0315z: Another minor glitch, brief dead air, then picked up where left off.  Beatles "Twist and Shout"

After I ran my recording through noise reduction I could hear the High Plains Relay Service ID just before the start of this program.

ZZ Top "La Grange"

Roller coaster up/down fades but good enough peaks to ID familiar songs and station IDs.

North American Shortwave Pirate / Unid 6933 LSB Portuguese music
« on: November 13, 2011, 0059 UTC »
Interesting catch here - since around 2315z 11/12/11, on 6933 LSB, hearing Spanish or Portuguese language music (confirmed as Portuguese by fellow on IRC who knows the language).  Audio very distorted, sounds like either heavily compressed stream to minimize latency, or possible overdriven audio from mic next to speaker.  Was fairly strong via Global Tuners remotes from east coast to midwest, but just barely audible here at home.

North American Shortwave Pirate / Captain Morgan 6950 AM
« on: November 12, 2011, 0425 UTC »
11/12/11, 6950 AM, 0420z: Billy Joel "We Didn't Start the Fire", UK voice ID for Captain Morgan, Rolling Stones "Honky Tonk Women", "It's Only Rock and Roll", David Bowie "Let's Dance", Steppenwolf "Born to be Wild".  Strong peaks with some slow fades to barely audible, via upper midwest remote tuner (too much local RFI at home for clear copy).
