Spy Numbers / HM01 running late...
« on: November 06, 2017, 1711 UTC »
It's as if Pedro forgot to "fall back." HM01 wasn't on at 1600z at all, but the carrier came up on its 1600z frequency of 11435 at 1650, and it's operating there as if it's intended to be on 1700z now. Since they've always stuck to a UTC schedule and never done a DST shift in the past, AND since yesterday they were on their usual UTC schedule, I'm going to assume human error for now. Will observe over the rest of the daylight hours here and see if it continues to be an hour later than we'd expect.

UPDATE 18:47z: Some time during the 1800 hour, HM01, which began on 11530, QSY'd to 11635.

Not very strong and sounds like it's not right on 6930.

Others reported it as early as 0001. Clarinet music with a fair signal with some good peaks. Thanks for the show!
0015 signal coming up, sounds like some intense klezmer music.

Other / Firedrake, 7415 AM, b17
« on: November 04, 2017, 1519 UTC »
There's usually at least one spot on the dial that I can count on hearing The Firedrake jammer on any given day during a broadcast season. This time it looks like it will be 7415 starting at 1500. HFCC shows that IBB has this frequency broadcasting from Tiniang 1500-1900, so presumably this is jamming RFA.

Also copied on 14828 USB at 1440. The 1420 signal was good in Denver, but the 1440 was SINPO 55555. Null message sent.

Fair signal in Denver, synthesizer or electronic music
2229 CW, but I don't have any decoders running.  :'(
Off at 2230 or 2231.

Thanks for the show!

Spy Numbers / HM01 missing again
« on: November 03, 2017, 1816 UTC »
I had posted about this under "other" since some apparent freebanders showed up, but decided to combine that with the news that HM01 is once again missing from its 1600/1700/1800 block of transmissions.

I was tuned in for HM01's daily 1600 broadcast on 11435 AM like usual, but it had trouble. Despite a nice strong carrier, the actual audio was severely undermodulated, and the transmission cut out around 1603. I stayed on it in case it came back, but it never did. Nor was it ever on 11530, or 11635 as of this posting (1816z).

But what DID come up were some presumed freebanders. They first appeared around 1632 and were still there at 1652. Very strange to see them on a frequency known for HM01 to every SWLer and HF operator in the Western Hemisphere.

UPDATE: HM01 was not heard at all at 11530/1700z, 11635/1800z, 11635/2100z, or 10715/2200z as would normally be expected. I didn't stay up to check if the 04 NOV broadcasts for 0500-1000z broadcast at all or not.

Very weak, but definitely copied here in Denver. I could hear the K-pop song that began the broadcast, but the numbers portion is indistinct. Off at 1537.

Very good signal copied in Colorado. The earlier transmission at 1400 (17462 USB) wasn't heard at all, while the 1420 transmission (16114 USB) was heard, but weak. Null message sent.

There's a possibility that this new number group and file were supposed to be debuted on 03 NOV, but we won't know until tomorrow (05 NOV). If the final digit advances to "2" then it was supposed to be sent on 03 NOV initially. If still "1," then 04 NOV was the first day.

Not on 11435 until about 16:50. As I write this it's proceeding as normal, not switching up to 11530, almost as if Pedro forgot to "fall back" (1600z is 12:00pm Eastern time during DST, and now 1700z is that time). But 11435 was on 1600 like it was supposed to be yesterday...

EDIT - they did get it back on track during the 1800 hour, which started on 11530 but QSY'd to 11635. The 2100/11635 and 2200/10715 transmissions occurred as expected as well.

0020 OM "You are about to participate in a great adventure" x4
0021 spooky ambient music - sounds like a KIPM intro
S7 signal, nice and clear though. Still doing ambient sounds as of 0026.
Still S7, still ambient at 0039
0042 SSTV
0043 "All Along The Watchtower" Jimi Hendrix Experience
0047 SSTV, has Pee Wee ID
0049 "Midnight" Jimi Hendrix
0055 SSTV
0057 "Young Lust" Pink Floyd
0100 SSTV
0102 "Dee" Ozzy Osbourne
0103 "Crazy Train" Ozzy Osbourne
0105 music suddenly segued into "Tainted Love" Marilyn Manson
0106 another sudden segue into "Hair Of The Dog" Nazareth
0107 another segue into "Do Your Balls Hang Low" Koit
0108 another segue into "Pussy Liquor" Rob Zombie
0110 deep fade. Voice apparent at noise floor but not intelligible
0111 couple of snippets of country songs, then couple of YL's talking
0112 "Keep Yer Hands Off My P.B.R." Scuzz Twittly
0116 had stepped away for a moment, but nothing's on now.

Replayed the show later - my MMSSTV had a bad setting that was screwing up my SSTV reception (sync and skew were bad), but I got it fixed, replayed the recording I made, and here's what I got.

One of the interesting things about this station, besides being the most reliably copyable African national broadcaster I can copy, is that they will often (not always, but often) sign on early with some music before getting into their distinctive interval music and finally a nice "Nigeria!" at about the official 0600 sign on time. Tonight they're playing an American gospel tune. SIO 444. Actual frequency 7254.925 kHz. (It drifts around, but not much from day to day.)

EDIT: video of reception, per shazam the song was "God Is Good All The Time" by Don Moen.

An often dependable daily copy throughout the summer and fall here in Denver. Japanese language transmission beginning at 1700 and going til 1900, generally with a program of western music of some sort, although at the moment they're playing what sounds like late 60s rock/pop that Shazam informs me is a Japanese band (all in Japanese kanji script, no idea who they are or how old the music really is). It sounds a lot like the Partridge Family, but with more driving guitar. Female announcer between songs. SI0 333.
