Some hints on getting software cw decoders to print legibly;
Use the second harmonic of the cw note if you can, that way no band noise to give you false output.
Another is to use a decoder that works well to begin with, such as cwget, wcode, k500, etc.

"While it seems improbable, in this day and time, that stations like VC01, VC03, and MC03, could be part of an actual military network, after all they seem so old school, once you get over that preconceived bias the possible answers become few, and such a military network starts to rise to the top as an answer."

The reason for Chinese and Russian military use of hf cw is they want their radio ops to be fluent in cw and the vagaries of hf before the big one starts. They know the sats and land based telecom switching centers will be the first targets to be hit (kinetically or electronically) in any real global conflict.

« on: January 05, 2019, 2338 UTC »
WWV is coming in on 2.5, 5, 10, 15, and 20MHz @ 2337Z 05JAN19, no trace of 25Mhz sadly. Noticed my rig was off a few hz so used wwv to clear that up and checked each wwv freq.

When ferrets won't do, it's time to open the case and get jiggy like wil smif suggested in that video with some .01 ceramics rated a few kv. Or perhaps add one of those ac line filters you can plug a ac cord into?

Then you'll have more woos, ah ahs, uhs, and yos than wil smif.

Amazing a city as large is still not trunked and digital by now. Omaha was still analog uhf for police, fire, and ems, and many of the fedz were still on the 160mhz band in the clear to the mid 2000s. Always fun to listen in on the dea doing stakeouts almost every day, then meeting the dea head after graduating the academy.

Maybe this isnt what you are looking for, but if you look long enough on ebay you can find a preamplifier for a lock in. These are usually made by stanford research or princeton applied research (eg&g PARc).
These often have a 1 to 10 MEGohm full differential input, and will really bring a rather VLF deaf receiver to life, as in many cases the poor performance of some receivers in that range is just because of their lack of sensitivity.

Beware bandwidth limitations though, some of these have an upper frequency of a kilohertz or less. many, however, will go up to a couple hundred kilohertz.

PS. there are also transimpedance models that have near zero input impedance, and a gain between 10 KV per amp or 1GV per amp. these are good for loops

Having one or more of these is arguably bragable.
