QG off the air this morning.
Allowed me to log 353  PG  Portage la Prairie  MB
for the first time.

FWIW, did some research on how this Manitoba town got its
intriguing sounding name.  Seems that the early explorers
Radisson and Groseilliers  (the French Canadian version
of our Lewis and Clark) had to portage (carry) their canoe
overland at this point hence the name.

Surprised you heard them in MD.  They have a weak signal.  The ground conductivity in that part of our state is poor.
They sometimes cannot be heard at my QTH which is good since it has allowed me to log NJ, FL, LA on the same channel.

Wyoming is a tough catch here in Michigan. 
Managed to snag KRND AM 1630  last year early one morning.
They run only 1 KW at night but there are only 2 other stations on that
channel.  The problem was pulling out KRND from under KCJJ.
The Iowa station really booms in here (sometimes even in the daytime
if conditions are right). 

Too bad about your logs, that has to be a big disappointment.
Logs here are all paper with loggings going back to 1980 and QSL cards
from the early 60s.  Problem is in trying to find a particular station or QSO. 

Good luck with your employment situation, hopefully you find something soon.

Not hearing them in the shack, very weak in and out on the car radio...  they usually have a better signal in here.
Had to listen to their beer hall music on-line.   
Looks like they changed their call sign, no longer CIAO  "chow".

WPHT is the big blaster on 1210 at night but just wondering if you have ever heard
WJNL on that channel ?  It is an omnidirectional 50kw daytimer located near
Traverse City MI.  Have never heard WJNL here in southern MI but maybe you can receive
via propagation over Lake Michigan.

S9+20 tonite on the 750 with just the whip

Don,
Just a heads up on your 750,
that S9+20 was with just the rotating ferrite bar on top of the radio,
the whip is only in use on SW, FM, and VHF air.
For LW/MW, the rotating ferrite bar is used unless you plug an external antenna
into the jack on the backside of the bar.  The jack is of the shorting type and
it disconnects the bar when an external antenna is plugged in.
(It also appears to disconnect the RF amp probably so as not to
overload the radio on strong AM signals when an external antenna is used).
On mine, the INT/EXT antenna switch on the side of the radio has no affect on LW/MW.
The 750 is a unique portable because it has the nice feature of provision for
external antennas on all bands.  Most portables don't allow for an external
LW/MW antenna. 

The owners manual is rather vague about all this, it took me a while to
sort it all out.

The problems that AM has will not be solved with IBOC:
1. Programming
2. Noise levels at MW

IBOC does not fix the first problem and masks the second problem.

There are a couple of stations in the Minneapolis-St Paul area that transmit on C-QUAM. They solve the first problem and sound fantastic. The second problem, is an enforcement (or, lack thereof) problem.

Uncle Charlie can go a long ways in "AM revitalization" if they enforce the Part 15 rules as written today. Its also up to the radio stations to put on the air programming the listeners want to hear.

Just leave bad enough alone.  In the long run the AM band will fix itself.  Non-viable stations will cease operation.
Viable stations in order to stay viable will have to offer programming that well serves the "public interest, convenience,
and necessity" (what they should be doing all along).  In other words, the market will fix itself.  In the process, there
will be fewer stations in the end.  Hate to see any station go dark but if it means better programming and less
interference, so be it.
