I hate to hear that. Serbia never had a huge signal at my locale, but it was steady and solid copy. Most of those Balkan stations were like that.

BTW, is Albania still on the air?

The government is getting ready to remove humpback whales from the endangered species list. If you weren't so bullheaded we could have been in on the ground floor of the soon to be booming whale oil industry. It's going to be bigger than shale oil. I'd already picked out my whale oil tycoon name, T. Boone Pigmeat.

You and your irrational fear of roaming penguins in the whaling grounds.

Equipment / Re: Antennas for Beacons (tricky terrain)
« on: April 24, 2015, 0120 UTC »
Hmmmm..... With a low power tx and near vertical incidence antenna like you're using, you may simply be outside the range of the groundwave of the antenna and in the skip zone at a kilometer away

A NVIS antenna sends a signal nearly straight up, and it reflects back down relatively close, but not too close. I've had reports from 25 to 600 kilometers away during a single broadcast using an NVIS antenna.

Do a search for online receivers 150 to 300 Km's from you. Check for the signal there the next time you set the beacon up. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Very nice catch for this time of year. The storm noise has really jumped in the past 2-3 weeks as spring gets cranked up.

Thank you, Mr. Fansome. A delightful and informative post.

Tim and the boys on 3885 are some of the funniest guys on the HF bands. Tonight's "live show" starts in about an hour and goes on all night. I'm a regular listener.

Huh? / Cat eating African monitor lizards are overrunning Florida!
« on: April 14, 2015, 1346 UTC »
Per Yahoo news.

If I lived in Florida and owned cats, I would be shopping for a guard penguin. They're widely used in the Cape Province of South Africa to keep the leviathans at bay.

You can often find the guard penguins atop Table Mountain keeping watch over the interior for advancing lizards. It's said they can see to Cairo from there but I don't buy it. Maybe Kinshasa or Kigali, but not Cairo.

A slight carrier on the Grundig YB-400, but not enough audio to id it on the peaks. I'll call the antenna a random wire, 25 feet of bell wire strung under the eaves of the back porch.

Good to hear you're back, PJ. That RS mixer you sold me years ago is on the table across the room.

I had to find out through other sources that Scarfman passed on a month ago. Not a peep out of the Grim Fansome. When obscure muscians die, you can crank obits out by the hundreds When the true King of Dx'er's goes to his reward, nada.

I knew you were jealous of him and his unique sense of style, but this is beyond the pale.

I did a little checking. LAD was back in jail as of 2013. He violated a restraining order by making threats towards and stalking a woman.  I don't know if it was the same woman as before. He's in his mid-30's now.

I knew he had been on the regional news for something in the past couple of years, but I couldn't remember for what.

Al, Britney is threatening to shave her head again. Leave the woman alone.

He kidnapped his former HS girlfriend at her sorority house at the University of Kentucky. Led the cops on a wild chase across eastern Kentucky, got arrested and did a short stint in jail.

When he got out ,he tried to do it again. LAD came from a wealthy family, but they weren't influential enough to save his ass a second time. I think he was released a few years back for the second offense.

I went to college with his Uncle, a great guy. In that family they're either brilliant or batshit crazy. LAD was the latter.

Amplifier go BANG! No show my homies.

I thought that's what happened. I had the sound of someone tuning up, some swooshes, and then nada.

I hope it's nothing too serious.

By the way, pay attention to the title of this thread. "Fansome's right". This is almost always true.

"almost" ??? Can we trust Mr. Pigmeat to be the final arbiter of the rare moments when you might be wrong?

Don't drag me into his weird world. The other day he was telling me a whopper about his youth as a basketball playing beaver.
