General Radio Discussion / Some Interesting Blog Posts
« on: January 22, 2014, 1421 UTC »
I was just searching random things last night when I came across these interesting blog posts.  They are older posts (2006 and 2012) but I thought someone here may find them interesting if they don't know about them already.

Utility Planet: Google Earth Coordinates to Look At, July 2006

Matthew Aid has two posts:
Chinese SIGINT Sites
Changji: China’s Biggest SIGINT Site

I thought they might be interesting to those who monitor the utility and spy numbers stations.

I'm not using my dongle since I bought my AFEDRI.  I don't think I ever got it to work with the dongle.

Spy Numbers / Re: HM01 (?) 11633 KHz AM copied ~0830
« on: December 09, 2013, 1526 UTC »
... When listening to an AM signal the best way to confirm you are tuned to the correct frequency is to switch from AM to USB, and then to LSB.  If you are properly tuned there will be little or no change in the pitch of the audio as you switch.  Of course if you do not have seperate USB and LSB switch positions this is not an option.

T!

Another great tip that I'm adding to my notebook, thanks Token!

Would any of you mind posting your settings for the "DSP", "SDR", and "DMD" buttons?  I'm trying to figure out where to set these at.  Mine currently are:

SDR: Bandwidth/sample rate -1800 KHz 20000 Ksps, RF Gain/Attn - 0 dB, SDRIQ IF Gain/Att - 24 dB, AFEDRI gain: -1, Post-Attenuator S-Metering is unchecked.

DSP: FTT Size - 16384 pts, FTT Averaging - 1, 2D Screen Size - 50%, Mouse Click Resolution - 50 Hz, Max Display Rate - 50 Updates/Sec, Highlight Button Text is checked, Freq Offset - 0.

DMD:
AM: AGC ON - Checked, Use Hang Timer - Unchecked, Slope 0, Knee - -120 dB, Decay - 20 mS, FM Squelch - just past the right edge of the CW Offset box, CW Offset - 0 Hz.
SAM: AGC ON - Checked, Use Hang Timer - Unchecked, Slope 0, Knee - -120 dB, Decay - 20 mS, FM Squelch - far left, CW Offset - 0 Hz.
FM: AGC ON - Checked, Use Hang Timer - Unchecked, Slope 0, Knee - -120 dB, Decay - 200 mS, FM Squelch - far left, CW Offset - 700 Hz.
USB: AGC ON - Checked, Use Hang Timer - Unchecked, Slope 0, Knee - -69 dB, Decay - 20 mS, FM Squelch - above the "H" in Hz on CW Offset, CW Offset - 500 Hz.
LSB: AGC ON - Checked, Use Hang Timer - Unchecked, Slope 0, Knee - -120 dB, Decay - 200 mS, FM Squelch - far left, CW Offset - 0 Hz.
CWU: AGC ON - Checked, Use Hang Timer - Unchecked, Slope 0, Knee - -120 dB, Decay - 20 mS, FM Squelch - far left, CW Offset - 64 Hz.
CWL: AGC ON - Checked, Use Hang Timer - Unchecked, Slope 0, Knee - -120 dB, Decay - 20 mS, FM Squelch - far left, CW Offset - 0 Hz.

Thanks,

Kent

SDR - Software Defined Radio / SdrDx and VFO Suite [Solved]
« on: November 15, 2013, 1753 UTC »
Is anyone using these two programs together? I can't seem to change frequencies and there is no "High Edge" or "Low Edge" as mentioned in the documentation.
I posted a comment on the developer's site, but have not had a response in a week. I thought I would check here.

Solved.  I had the wrong IP address entered.  I had entered the IP address of the radio and not the computer. Things seem to be working now. There is still no high or low edge as mentioned in the documentation, but  I'm guessing that has something to do with a version change.

Software / Software to demodulate RDFT
« on: November 15, 2013, 1406 UTC »
Other than DigiTrx, are there software programs that will demodulate RDFT?  I would prefer something that is native to OS X, but I can run it in a VM (windows 7 or XP) if needed.

I would like to demodulate the data from HM01.

SDR - Software Defined Radio / Re: I/Q Data for Dummies
« on: November 14, 2013, 2005 UTC »
If that is for dummies, I'm not sure what it makes me... I still don't get it.  ???  I think I'll let my brain rest and try again later.  Too much math!

Thanks for all the replies.
On the subject of SDR recordings, and I/Q vs Audio, K5KNT, you do know you can select in HDSDR what kind of recording to make, yes?  Either a simple audio recording of the demodulated audio (can be played back in almost any audio play application), or an “SDR” or I/Q recording of the sample bandwidth?
I am still playing with HDSDR's recording features. I had it set last night to record just the demodulated audio of a scheduled HM01 broadcast but I forgot to stop the playback of a recording I was listening to (I left it on pause) so the recording never started. Boy do I feel stupid.

I'm still trying to understand the I/Q data stuff.

I have a few recordings I have made using HDSDR (the OS X port). When I try to play them back in QuickTime, iTunes, or Windows Media Player I don't get any audio.  Is there some sort of post processing that I need to do to listen to these in any of the mentioned players?

SDR - Software Defined Radio / SdrDx Any Helpful Tips for A Newbie?
« on: November 11, 2013, 2050 UTC »
I've been trying HDSDR and SdrDx with my AFEDRI and I was wondering if anyone using SdrDx has some helpful tips.  I've been reading through the documentation but I'm not understanding some of it.

For example I really do not understand the purpose of or how to use the screen in the lower right hand corner.

Also, I posted a comment on the developer's site asking about scheduled recording. His reply

You can drive SdrDx’s recording facilities from a Python script; any schedule you like. Very simple to do, presuming you know a little bit about python.[\quote] Although I would like to learn Python I would like a more user friendly option.

Thanks,

Kent

Spy Numbers / HM01 (?) 6 Nov 2013
« on: November 06, 2013, 1539 UTC »
My first capture since getting my AFEDRI and PAR EF-SWL antenna set up.  ;D

Recorded Capture: start: 0659z (in progress), end: 0725z, 9330KHz AM,  YL speaking Spanish and digital alternate. On occasion it sounds like a broadcast station in the background.

Based on the schedule from the Enigma 2000 Newsletter #79 and descriptions I've read I believe this is HM01.

I'm not sure what other information is needed/wanted.  Let me know and I'll provide what I can.

All books are listed as written by Roland Proesch:
