I've been listening to 365 AA Fargo, ND (KENIE) for 20+ years. Used to use that fella when flying around back then, but haven't flown in years. Still tune it in today... listening to it right now on an old Collins ADF in the basement. AA is like an old friend.

Hope they don't decommission too many of them. On the other hand... if they clear out the lower part of the band, perhaps the FCC will allocate some LW broadcasting? Would love to have a 2MW transmitter. However, can't afford the electric bill.

Not so much as a hint of carrier at home, so listened on a Perseus in Northern Italy. Some good Polka music. Was around S7. Off around 0202Z.

Took 20 minutes for him to say good bye.

They've been like that for as long as I can remember going back to the mid-80's. Maybe I'm getting old and memory fades, but I could swear the guys on ch 6 are the exact same guys that have been on there for decades droning on & on & on & on about absolutely nothing.

Don't forget to venture beyond the allocated band. Have some locals here that hang out on 27.455 USB.

@Newfoundland DXer
Didn't sound like maritime chat. Heard him again last night (12/25/2011 around 0300Z) on 1690 AM. Talked for a bit, played about 15-20 seconds of music, talked more, dropped the carrier, back with more talk & a little music, and so on. Don't remember him talking with anyone on the air this time.

Have seen Harri's blog, but didn't hear anything that may be identified as that one, but I sure wouldn't bet a beer that it isn't.

Sorry... heard around 0130-0300Z.

Heard the Voice of Korea on 13760 & 15180 here (S5 & S3, respectively). Recorded 29 minutes of them from a Perseus in Japan on 7220.

They were giving a long tribute to their Dear Leader. Music, tribute, more music.   ::)

(yeah, not pirate, but same topic).

Wonder who was sending the SSTV images ...  ???

Heard the Voice of Korea (North Korea) on 13760 & 15180. 13760 was better, around S7.

They were giving a tribute to their deceased dictator.

Wonder if related-

Connected to a remote Perseus over in Austria (12/18/2011 around 0100Z). Tuning around 1600-1800 and stumbled across a rather loud Serbia. I don't speak Serb, but he said "Serbia" a few times. This was on 1670 AM. At first, he was talking then would give some sort of ID with "Serbia" in it then the carrier would drop. Someone else in USB would talk. When he'd stop, then the AM guy would talk for a bit. They went back & forth for a while.

About an hour later, the AM guy was on continuously and sounded like he was talking with another guy who was on a two-way FM radio.

No clue if this was the same Radar Serbia Radio or another guy.

Equipment / Re: Sangean ATS-909X
« on: December 19, 2011, 0158 UTC »
I picked one up last February.

It works pretty decent.

Compared to my Sony ICF-2010, on the upper bands (14MHz and higher) it performs comparably with the whip antenna. The 25' wire antenna that comes with it makes little difference.

Below about 14 MHz, it becomes hard of hearing on the whip only and really could use that 25' wire ant. The Sony 2010 sitting next to it works fine on the lower bands with its whip (although, the wire ant helps it too).

MW broadcast works well. Picks up lots of things.

On LW, it seems to pick up MW stations as well... kind of a disappointment.

No problems with FM.

Audio quality is pretty good for such a small speaker.

Went on a trip overseas and wanted to bring a radio. Wanted to bring the 2010, but didn't want it to get broken or seized, so it had to stay home. Instead I took the replaceable 909X.

Worked out very well for the trip. Recorded a bunch of local MW/FM & SW stations.

I'm fairly pleased with it.

Don't know which firmware they're shipping with now, so can't answer that part.
