Huh? / Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Ric Ocasek, 75
« on: September 20, 2019, 1753 UTC »
Nope, he was a sell-out. Band's like The Cars popularized the term "New Wave" which allowed radio stations and record stores to promote that "punk lite"sound pushed in the late 70's, like The Police and the Go-Go's when they should have been playing the Clash, The Jam, The Ramones and The DK's. "Holiday In Cambodia" would have surely been a #1 hit.

Damn you, Rick Ocasek! You too, Sting!

Pretty sure that one charted in the UK. I recall Biafra talking about the DK's being a Top 40 band over there.

Sorry Gents "Holiday in Cambodia" didn't make the charts here. Neither did "California Uber Alles" (what I would consider their other 'big hit').

DKs did have some chart success ... "Kill the Poor" reached 49 in the singles chart.  "Too Drunk to F***" managed to make it to 36 for 1 week in the Top 40. Their first album "Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables" made 33 on the album chart with 3 weeks in the top 40 and got them a gold disc.

I guess Jello's claim about being a top-40 band in the UK is [just about justified by that 1 week for "Too Drunk ...".

Looking at the WRMI schedule on their website broadcasts on 4980Khz only started at 2300UTC with "Supreme Master TV".

It is possible they had some unscheduled programming (or the web site is out of date) earlier but the 4980Khz beams in southerly direction (160 degrees according to web site).

I usually get WRMI on 7780Khz  (which beams north-easterly, 44 degrees) but normally not before local nighttime; most days its about 2000 or 2100UTC before I get a readable signal. I have received a broadcast from them targetted to the Caribbean once (on 5010Khz)  but only in the early hours of the morning (0100-0200 UTC).

Not discounting Skipmuck's suggestion (he's much more experienced in this stuff than me) but seems unlikely to me.

Broadcast Announcements / FRS Holland - trying again 8-Sep-19
« on: September 07, 2019, 0915 UTC »
Again slightly short notice but only received in my inbox over night ...

After 'difficult' conditions last week FRS have scheduled a repeat for tomorrow on 5810Khz only.

Hopefully they will have more success, last week I could get anything on either frequency direct or via the 3 webSDR's I tried in the London area.

At the moment it hardly seems worth turning the radio on - every report on here seems to include the word 'trace', 'weak' and 'noise'. Apart from LHH and Harmony (which are both noise affected) I don't think I have got even a reasonable signal whenever I check the posts from Ray and others.

Anyway here's FRS's announcement ...

Dear FRS Friends,

Next Sunday September 8th FRS will repeat last Sunday's broadcast which suffered from very poor/ unstable propagation conditions.
That means once again a start at 16:52 UTC/ 18:52 CEST. Frequency: only 5810 kHz. It looks like higher freqs like 7700 suffer from
very long skip nulling out reception in large parts of out target area. We hope for better/stronger reception but realize that the current
conditions simply are (very) poor!
Sunday Sept. 8th  16:52- 21:00 UTC 5810 kHz ...FRS' 39th Anniversary featuring Jan, Bert, Dave, Peter & Mike. Tune in!
Have a good weekend,

73s  Peter V. (on behalf of the entire FRS Family).

Borderline audible under noise. Can make out music but not id track.

In case you haven't seen it, received the below in my inbox over night ....

Dear FRS Friends,

A bit late but still in time...next Sunday FRS-Holland hopes to celebrate its 39th anniversary!
All details are to be found on our website:
http://www.frsholland.nl/20-latest-news/133-frs-holland-celebrates-its-39th-anniversary.html

Programming on 7700//5810 kHz will commence at 16:52 UTC/ 18:52 CEST.
Last July conditions were a bit disappointing, we hope for the better next Sunday evening.
In contrast with previous years, we will pay much attention to our anniversary with lots of
memories, archive recordings and...great music.

Thanks to all of you who wrote in for our July 28th (repeat August 11th) broadcast(s).
All e-mail/ snail mail will be handled within the upcoming weeks.
Hopefully we will meet next Sunday! Your support remains vital to us!!

73s, Peter Verbruggen on behalf of the FRS team.
