A HAM I know had a wire loop inside his chain link fence and worked Europe on 20m with 100w ssb on that thing. Prolly wasn't even 300ft of wire.

Try hooking your wire to it and see how it fares, or run additional wire along it. Also, it offers the option to use the fence as a ground to make your wire a beverage antenna.

I was in Key West as kid when my sister and I walked to the store to get a soda. We ran into a guy outside in only a Speedo and a white fisherman's cap watching a sub leave the Naval base. The only parts of that guy free of hair were his palms, the soles of his feet, his forehead and the areas around his neck it looked like his barber shaved. Couldn't tell about the rest of his head, due to the cap. He was a sight to behold and inspire. I remember thinking, "I hope I have that much body hair when I grow up!"

Alas, I fell short. I could never raise a good crop of shoulder hair to connect my back hair to my chest hair.

Yep, on ground/in ground antennas are always low noise, but also low desired signal level too. Also consider a preselector, those can help wring the last bits of rf our of the system as well as offer protection from off freq signals.

Almost unpossible to beat the efficiency of the lowly, forsaken, dipole. Glad you liked the white papers, what got me to the BBC site was a search for using small loops/short wires on hf, and this paper was right on topic;

My daughter and the neighbor kids used the low ends of my longwires/inverted vee's to play badminton over. It's why I switched to Dollar Store speaker wire for antennas until they were grown. Eight feet is my minimum height for any longwire. You don't want to clothesline a tall meter man.

Lol when I had a sloper going from the second story br to the mailbox at the end of the drive, the mailmen finally asked wtf it was, on hearing it's a shortwave antenna, a sloper to be precise, they laughed and said we all thought it was some kind of earthquake seismic sensor thingy. It was red insulated wire so everyone saw it, had a white porcelain insulator at the end. Reason no one ever walked into it or complained about it is we had the last house on that side of the street and the sidewalk ended a foot on the other side of the mailbox.

If you can hear it, or next time you hear it, see of you can use a ambc portable to null it out, then you can kinda tell what azimuth the station is from you. I'd say use tdoa on it, but the whole country has stations on 600kc.

Hmm. I wonder how well uhf digital modulation works in a nuclear fireball environment compared to uhf analog fm? The freq range (and power levels) used for mux is calculated to be resistant to nuclear fireball effects where it (the nuke) wipes out pretty much all radio waves for a short time and severely degrades others for a longer period within a few hundred miles of ground zero. In other words, apparently you can't send a signal thru a nuclear fireball from one side to the other, and some of the effects last due the volume of ionised air.

It wouldn't surprise me to see an upgraded mux, I mean they're trying to throw away one of the most effective warfighting platforms the US has ever developed (A10 Warthog), so why not ditch what works?

This site has a lot of info on the subject as far as hardware goes;
https://fas.org/nuke/guide/usa/c3i/index.html

However, the section marked Combat Ciders is actually Combat Cinders.

Also 366.600 just lit up with modem traffic on orderwire.
