General Radio Discussion / HD FM Audio Drives Me Nuts
« on: December 10, 2019, 2043 UTC »
Perhaps some of the folks with broadcast industry experience can comment on this.

I note on good receivers that FM HD audio has some annoying high-frequency (~10-20 KHz) residues or artifacts. It almost sounds like a reverb at those frequencies and is more noticeable with speech than with music.

If I turn off HD mode on the receiver, I get a lot less of this (but it's still there to some degree) but regardless I still end up turning the treble all the way down because these artifacts drive me nuts. I have heard this on multiple receivers. I do not hear the same artifacts on non-HD stations. I can say that it may depend upon the transmitter being listened to but not 100 % sure on that.

I don't know the exact source of this. It might be due to phase shifts in that frequency range but I am not sure. (I wonder what a group delay plot of the audio spectrum on HD modulated audio looks like.) HD audio is supposed to be flat and not use the high-frequency pre-emphasis used in analog FM so, in theory the group delay before the encoder would be kinda flat (...but after restoration to analog at the receiver it might look very different). I'm guessing that it is some artifact of the audio sampling and the bit-rate stream, perhaps aliasing issues. I did some searching but was unable to come up with a discussion of something similar. I did find this document on HD audio processing and alludes to artifacts but doesn't get into specifics:

Employing a clipper as a peak limiter in a HD Radio system will work, but there are sonic penalties to be paid. Any clipping process yields harmonics of the fundamental source signal, and even with distortion masking some second order harmonic  content will remain. This adds to the audio spectrum and aggravates the encoder, which in turn spawns additional sonic   artifacts. This is particularly noticeable in the high-frequency range – where most codec  artifacts exist – and is very noticeable with certain program material; therefore, another form of peak limiter is needed.

Does anyone recognize these artifacts and know the origin?

Guessing this is Radio Continental but not sure, Signal is very weak.
...and as soon as I post the TX is of the air.  :(

1858 - Creedence Clearwater Revival song.
1902 - Latin music. I have it on 3904.92 KHz.
1906 - I keep hearing professional-sounding announcements between songs. In this case it sounded like "POWER!" but I am very unsure.
1911 - In English with Dutch accent, "On shortwave...(static crash)...East Coast Holland" and TX immediately off the air.

156
2044 - Country and Western song. Very strong in Austria. SINPO 54344. Exact freq = 6287.97 KHz.
2048 - German- language schlager song.
2052 - Another German song. Long breaks between songs.
2056 - Watched on my waterfall station QSY in 1 KHz steps to 6280 KHz.
2058 - Willie Nelson? QSY to 6275 as soon as Quadzilla went QRT.
2100 - Merle Haggard.
2110 - ID by Johnny Tobacco. Said he was back at full health. Glad to hear it Johnny.
2121 - When the Saints Come Marching In
2130 - Brief comments auf Deutsch.
2133 - TX off after a German song.

Should be moved to Clandestine Stations.

Program of music and talk. Sounded a lot like Japanese to me and thus I thought it was NHK, but in retrospect it was missing some of the telltale phrases and sounds.

Not // NHK output on 9625 and 9670 KHz, which come from Japan.
Still on at 2140 UTC. Not // Voice of Korea in Japanese on 7580 and 9650 KHz.
Transmitter is still on the air at 0100 UTC 10 December.

On 10 December 1800 UTC undergoing jamming.

158
Weak in southern Germany but I can hear a fast beat through the noise.
Signal is much better in Norway. SINPO 32333 with splatter from 6284 KHz. Electronic dance music at 2030 UTC.
TX suddenly of mid-song at 2033 UTC.

159
Dutch schlager sing-along type music.
Blues music with male vocalist. SINPO 32333 on SDR in Norway.
QSY to 6276.91 at 2046 UTC.
TX off (or QSY?) at 2047. Per my waterfall display, might be QSY to 6280.9 then 6290.9 at 2049.
R & R at 2054 UTC.
Dead air at 2103 UTC. Carrier has drifted to 6290.98 KHz.
Boogie-Woogie music resumes at 2105 UTC.

SDR - Software Defined Radio / Kiwi SDR Map Question
« on: December 04, 2019, 2115 UTC »
One thing that has bugged me is that the map on SDR.hu (https://sdr.hu/map) does not, for some reason, show all available kiwiSDRs.

This backup map shows more, and is perhaps more comprehensive: http://rx.linkfanel.net/

I can't understand why the main website would not show all available SDRs. Does anyone know why? Is it a question of whose software is in use at each node in the network and the map on SDR.hu only shows SDRs with certain software?

One of the reasons I used the kiwiSDR SNR map ( http://sibamanna.duckdns.org/sdr_map.html - off line for many weeks now) was the rich list of seemingly many more SDRs than on the SDR.hu map, plus the very useful SNR info.

Clandestine Stations / Iran International 6270 AM 1650 UTC 30 Nov 2019

Noting jamming underneath today.

162
They have been moving through the 48 meter band and today they are on 6270 KHz.

I have made several runs with TDoA using multiple receiving sites and I get reasonably consistent results that the transmitter is located somewhere within a few hundred km of Tashkent, Uzbekistan. That could mean that it is not in Uzbekistan; it could also be in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan or Kazakhstan.

163
ID 1108 UTC but I missed it. QRM from a carrier on 6230 and STANAG on 6235-6 makes the need for filtering. Dance/electronic music.
1116 ID with computerized voice (still missed it) then SSTV. I'm stuck using a bad speaker for now so tough to get the name.
1130 ID again and Terry is right. "Radio Illegal" for sure but not sure about the "Europe" part of it, but I will go with "Shortwave" instead.

164
Came on right aftr Mona Lisa/Rona lisa signedoff. Announcements in Dutch with The Cult's "Sanctuary" in the background.

165
Sign-off announcement at 1034 UTC. TX off at 1037 UTC.
