Equipment / PK’s Loops Model A-LOOP-TAM AM Loop Antenna review.
« on: January 19, 2018, 2049 UTC »
Thus far, I've made my own loop antennas, but being an ex-apartment dweller, I like checking out how these do out there, and Radio Jay Allen does that here,    https://radiojayallen.com/pks-loops-a-loop-tam-am-loop-antenna/

JTA 1st listed this on The FRN.net. I'm getting it weak on a C Crane Radio Plus playing The Doors - Lite My Fire.

Yep, looks like C2C AM will be moving from 640AM Toronto to CFRB 1010 starting 1/1/2018. So what? Well, that means that C2C AM will then be on CFRX 6070kHz AM. So, Coast To Coast AM on shortwave. That would be a welcome addition to the bands.    https://www.coasttocoastam.com/article/new-canadian-affiliates/

Other / 3916Khz Santa Nets are back.
« on: December 18, 2017, 1328 UTC »
The annual Santa Nets are back on 3916LSB, nightly to 12/24/2017 at 01:30UTC, or 8:30PM EST. Neat, listening upon how they coordinate that. If you what to get the 'lil rugrats to QSO with Santa on your HAM station, e-mail     ke5ggy@gmail.com  , and you'll be given instructions. Ho-ho-ho...

General Radio Discussion / So, WTF happened to the Titus II?
« on: December 14, 2017, 1428 UTC »
Huh? That SDR portable the Titus II should have been out by now.         https://titusradio.com/       Anyone heard anything? I've had one on pre-order for over a year now.

North American MW Pirate Radio / Modern rockabilly tunage on 1630kHz!
« on: December 05, 2017, 1915 UTC »
Gave up on crappy propagation above 7MHz, and below 7MHz was all lightning crashes from the approaching storms cold front. So, tried the 'ol Sangean ATS-803A on the Windom at 04:55UTC and heard a modern rockabilly tune with YL vocalist on 1630kHz AM. Of course, a strong fade-out by the top of the hour. Neat, whatever that was, and even over the lightning crashes for a time.

Yep, that time of year where the FRS / GMRS channels will be loaded with hunting activity. I hear chatter already on my scanner on FRS CH1 already. The 5 MURS channels maybe good to check out as well. I don't think that anyone uses CB walkie-talkie CH14 anymore. 30 years ago that channel use to explode with hunter chatter during deer season, then on Christmas morning.

Huh, looks like Radio Survivor took a look at the 1990 video Inside Pirate Radio and wrote about that,       http://www.radiosurvivor.com/2017/11/08/glimpse-behind-scenes-shortwave-pirate-radio-1990/
Maybe I should send them Radio Wolf INT. BTW, THANKS Boomer, for the heads-up on this!

Two years ago, when I was looking at a beefier TX for MW Carrier-Current operation, I'd seen this at ebid.net,   https://www.ebid.net/us/for-sale/am-radio-station-broadcast-transmitter-71172504.htm

I can't believe that it's still for sale. Seems like a nice deal for someone whom can truck something that heavy.

General Radio Discussion / Radio Survivor to hit up LPAM.
« on: August 08, 2017, 1044 UTC »
Boomer alerted me to this,   http://www.radiosurvivor.com/2017/08/07/low-power-lpam/     At the very least, we should still keep the topic alive.

Ripping from SWL'ing, again, but sounds neat about DRM+, the digital alternative to analog wide-band FM,

http://www.radiomagonline.com/around-the-world/0020/south-african-station-tests-digital-radio-mondiale-features/39070

Huh,  they should use NYC, LA, or even Chicago, as a DRM+ test bed over here. Question is, will they, with the HD Radio IBOC foothold? Hmmmmm...

COOL!!!! Boomer was nice enough to FWR this to me, and it's quite a read:

http://www.insideradio.com/bumps-remain-on-long-path-to-am-revitalization/article_cbbd1766-54b6-11e7-9742-a37b51b593b5.html

I'd love to see AM stereo make a foot hold again, and although we might not be too happy being stuck with Motorola's C-QUAM, (Due to those phasing and wowing effects at night.), it does sound good and work pretty well, overall.
What the article doesn't hit upon is to open up AM for LPAM, for those that have been totally shut out of LPFM, due to the flood of FM translators on now. Maybe we should e-mail Tom King, president of Bristol, TN-based Kintronic Labs, to encourage his company to be forward thinking on AM, and see what he'd think about being on the LPAM bandwagon. Passing thought, [www.kintronic.com]

General Radio Discussion / U of AK does HAARP tours! Wanna' go?
« on: July 15, 2017, 1316 UTC »
Yeah, ripped from SWL'ing:  http://swling.com/blog/2017/07/haarp-open-house-august-19-2017/#respond

Heck yeah, if I was up there still, I'd do it. I've already been to the U of AK, albeit that was back in 1985.

Yep, that time of year again for this event,  http://www.arrl.org/field-day  .  And, no doubt that propagation will come in time to suck for this. It certainly did last year. Dead from 7MHz on up and no Sporadic E for 10M and 6M. Still, for DX'ers it's a chance to hear where all those stations from the USA and Canada are coming from since they exchange the call and the state, or province, they are at. And some places the states are divided. NYS is on of those for WNY, ENY, Long Island NY, etc. So, be listening on the regular HF FREQ's for these, 160M, 80M / 75M, 40M, 20M, 15M, 10M, and 6M. (No WARC bands, 60M, or the new MW and LW, bands.) Scanner listeners can listen for FM contesters on 29.600MHz, 52.525MHz and 52.540MHz, 146.550MHz and 146. 580MHz, 223.500MHz, 446.00MHz, 906.500MHz, and 1294.500MHz. Most activity is the lower HF bands, but if Sporadic E comes into play, then 10M and especially 6M will the the stars of the show. Happy DX'ing!!!!!
