The following url leads to a pdf on antennas and their secrets that you should know. Almost everything one might need to know about hf antennas in this tome.

Its author is a hero of mine from way back, he was in the FCC RID during WW2, and decades later became my antenna elmer without ever knowing about it because he wrote about his findings in QST and other publications for us newb HAMs to profit from.

He taught that nonresonant/reactive antennas can be made workable by canceling out the reactances at any point in the antenna system, and after the match is made the swr is low for the entire circuit. He also pointed out that as only resistances can eat power, no power is lost in a reactive antenna system when matched as the power will just bounce back and forth in the system till it leaves the antenna, just like we want it to. He wasn't dreaming with these declarations, he proved his ideas in practice as he designed some of the first satellite antennas for the US gov.
The unwashed claim a antenna tuner just fools the rig into believing it sees a low swr.

Equipment / PSA: On Ferrites and their Brittleness
« on: September 27, 2019, 2219 UTC »
A ferrite is a brittle thing, no give at all.

Unforgiving yet uncomplaining.

Knocked a ac surge arrestor off the desk like I was a cat or summin and ofc it dropped precisely atop a ferrite core that formerly enclosed a coax cable to reduce rfi. Shattered into a million shards. Spose some use can be made of it somehow.

Take care of your ferrites, for they are very sensitive.

Normally, NYC (Riverhead) isn't on 8912 till much later in the day. Spose this level of activity is due the propagation of late, with lower freqs being favoured over 11387, their usual strong sig hangout.

Yep.

Anyway, anyone ever notice a slight reduction in overall sig strength on hf at local midday? My theory is with the sun being right overhead, the d layer absorption is greatest and it partially eats hf sigs, not just ambc. Starts sometime around noon or shortly after, till after 1pm or so. Could just be guys went to lunch or something.

Needs a sporty name like Brief Meridian HF Absorption.
Or mebbe Solar Zenith HF Perturbation Period.

Hacking Iridium Satellites With Iridium Toolkit

Over on YouTube TechMinds has uploaded a video showing how to use the Iridium Toolkit software to receive data and audio from Iridium satellites with an Airspy. Iridium is a global satellite service that provides various services such as global paging, satellite phones, tracking and fleet management services, as well as services for emergency, aircraft, maritime and covert operations too. It consists of multiple low earth orbit satellites where there is at least one visible in the sky at any point in time, at most locations on the Earth.
