General Radio Discussion / Re: US CB to get FM
« on: July 24, 2021, 0654 UTC »
Well, it's about time! As long as it's NBFM, that should reduce AM overmod, splatter, and RFI. Should have been done years ago. Still, won't be heard as well as SSB, especially on the road, but could be better on the road than present AM, where you can get an earful of +30 lbs of noise levels. Now, will someone capitalize on making FM board kits for all those radios out there presently? Several companies did in the 1980's and 1990's.

Heard this on Amateur Radio Newsline #2282. With Sporadic "E" still in play, this should make for an interesting catch! https://ei7gl.blogspot.com/2021/07/new-us-experimental-station-wl2xup-now.html

Looks like the Russian have taken thing up a notch in DSP / SDR based receivers.    https://swling.com/blog/2021/07/guest-post-and-review-test-driving-the-russia-made-malahit-dsp-2/

Some unreal Sunsets and Blood Moon seen here in WV, due to the West Coast Fires.   https://www.space.com/smoke-from-us-wildfires-seen-from-space-july-2021

Heard again on drive home. I knew that this station had nice audio, but hearing Asia - Heat Of The Moment, and near full fidelity of that tune, like the high hats, and heard on a fairly narrow banded truck stereo, told me that the ENG of this station knew how to EQ this station well. Now, I want to hear this station on a wide-band receiver.

Huh.. I've FWR that to Amateur Radio Newsline and Richard Syrett's, The Conspiracy Show. Will they cover that? Eh... 50/50 chance there, but, ya never know.

Wow!!!! Fascinating read on this, that I did last night. what I'm still trying to understand is how Trudell actually got his programming off of Alcatraz Is. Mentioned, are the stations in CA and NY, but just how did he get heard on those stations? Thinking in 1969 - 1971 tech and links then, was it phone lease-lines, pre-recorded tape, or using a FREQ as an island to mainland link? So, unless that's known, I wouldn't call him a pirate operator, but could be considered a pirate occupier for the time on the island. Still, some great, unknown, USA history that few will ever learn, unfortunately. Thanks for posting this!

MW Loggings / Not hearing Hudson Valley TIS lately 1710kHz.
« on: July 16, 2021, 1916 UTC »
Yeah... For several weeks, I haven't heard that 100W Hudson Valley TIS from NJ. (Can't say as I miss them.) So, does that leave 1710kHz semi-open again? Hmmmmmmm???

Huh??? Found this interesting. Kenwood has a license-free HT that operates from 446.000MHz to 446.100MHz, at 1/2W ERP, in the 70cm HAM Band? When was this allowed? https://www.kenwood.com/sg/com/lfr/pkt-23/   Thought it 1st to be FRS, then I'd seen the 446MHz FREQ spec's. Looks like a neat simplex-only HT.
UPDATE:   Ah... Thank you Sparx! (Added reply below.) That would explain a few things there.

MW Loggings / 1270AM WDLR, Marysville, OH, 03:45UTC, 7/6/2021.

Huh... 3rd July in a row that I've been able to DX this station in WV. Promos as Y96.7FM, (Going with it's translator, of course.). Playing classic hits like Foreigner, Yes, Mr-Mr, Cindy Lauper, etc. https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/finder?sr=Y&s=C&call=wdlr&nav=home    What's so weird is that I only seem to be able to hear this station in the month of July, and I have tried in other months. Huh... Propagational clock-work, I guess. That night time pattern is pointed right at me. Is anyone else DX'ing this station?

Huh? / Windows 11? Why???
« on: June 30, 2021, 2202 UTC »
So, it's supposed to be like Mac OS? Mac OS sucks now. At least, I think it does. https://www.cnet.com/news/windows-11-release-date-this-is-when-you-can-install-microsofts-free-update/

Yeah... Not really radio related here, or could it be made to be? https://www.amazon.com/Windows-Computer-Support-Bluetooth-AIOEXPC/dp/B08TVM3M3B  Gotta' thank Rob, W8XRW for bring this to my attention. Heś using his for Yaesu C4FM Fusion WIRES-X. However, I could see using this PC Stick as an ultimate portable PC SDR. This would easily replace the Acer Netbook, with Intel Atom, from 2009, that I use to program most of my two-way rigs. So, possibilities here could be endless.

Well, I remember Brazil talked about this for at least a couple of year, so it's good to see that they're actually acted on this. Japan, on the other hand, has done this for decades, thus all those Sony's, Awia's, and other Japanese portables, that have the FM band extending down to 76MHz. They weren't useless in the 80's and 90's, since you could tune-in to TV CH5 and CH6 audio on them. And yes... You could tune-in the main video carriers for signal strength purposes. So, what other countries have adopted to go down to 76MHz?
