Dramatic sunrise here in Michigan this morning, the sun was huge !

Been a wet and cool September here in Michigan so far and it looks to continue on the cool side with a couple of cold fronts on the way.

The SRIII is my nicest sounding portable but it does have a problem with touchy tuning at the high end of the AM band.
Don't know whether it is a very slight mechanical backlash that is unnoticeable  at the low end of the scale but more pronounced at the more
compressed high end of the scale or if it is a varactor tuning issue.
Otherwise a hot performer on AM DX and probably deserves more than 3 stars.

Reception of them at this location has always been sporadic.  Only about 110 miles away and no other
competition on the frequency anywhere near close by but their signal if readable at all is usually weak.
May be on account of the poor soil (sandy) conductivity in that part of the state.
You probably get better reception as their signal propagates across the Lake.
Anyway, haven't much listened to them, sounds like mostly political blather.

TNX for the post, nice write up and pics.

Have logged MSQ but YKQ Fort Rupert QC usually dominates the 351 spot on the dial here in MI.

btw... my XYL is quite familiar with sudden diversions while cruising the countryside when an interesting
tower comes into view,  and she knows what a NDB site looks like  8)

Some mid-afternoon loggings on my PL-600 portable inductively coupled to a PAR EF-SWL.
A broken line of T-storms had moved off to the East and was generating continuous QRN...
probably covered some weaker beacons but was able to pull these out of the noise:

Sorta looks like half of a rhombic  ???
Which begs the question: would it be bi-directional (ZL, South Pacific) if left unterminated ?

Equipment / Re: ICOM ICR-75 vs. TECSUN S-2000
« on: August 08, 2020, 0930 UTC »
The S2000 is a nice radio, the Satellit 750 version had been discontinued for a couple of years but it has recently been returned.
So, it is popular but a bit pricey.
The only way to compare the selectivity between the R75 and the S2000 would be to look at their laboratory derived dynamic range specs.
There have been reviews of these specs for the R75 but could find so such info for the S2000.
Although the SWBC bands are not as crowded as once upon a time, the ham bands can be very crowded at times, so it depends on what, when, and where
you listen that selectivity becomes an issue.

That race is over before the horses even leave the barn.
They both will hear the weak signal but the 2000 will also hear all the other nearby signals...
the 75 not so much as it has twin PBT, DSP, and available narrow filters for both IFs.
The audio on the 2000 sounds nicer but for serious listening digging out weak sigs
headphones are the way to go.
The 2000 is what it isn't and it isn't a serious communications receiver.
Not trying to slam the 2000 here, it's a nice radio, it's just not a fair comparison.

In ON, YMG and YZE scheduled to go silent next month.

In MI, MB Manistee and MB Saginaw only 3kc apart with same ID.  ???

Hmmm...  this is a strange one.  Some AM stations have the annoying habit of IDing with the call letters of a sister FM station but it looks like WLHW-FM has no companion AM station.
However, there is a WHLN AM 1410 located in Harlan KY.  It only runs 41 watts at night but it is only about 140 miles away from WSCW in WVA.

Looks like IL still has a fair number of NDBs, MI not so much any more.

WRCR in NY was the dominant station here on 1700 before it went silent.  Now most nights KBGG  "The Champ" sports-talker in IA is heard here in Michigan.
Can sometimes catch WEUP in AL quite clearly in the morning at their sunrise when they go to 10 kw.  Have never been able to confirm the FL station or the TX stations.

Token,

Unfortunately that generation is mostly gone and their stories with them.
My father and uncles as well as some of my electrical mentors were WW II vets.
Their sea stories (some involving PBYs) were probably a big influence on my decision to enlist.
Initially worked on C-54s (formerly R5D)  and while the planes were WW II vintage,  the radio gear, although all tube,
was probably newer post war construction.
Anyway, you were fortunate enough to encounter some of the history, the gear, and the stories.

Token,
Just curious, you mentioned encountering  "old hands" with WW II experience...
there were a few of those guys left in the reserves back in the early 70s,
were you perhaps in a naval reserve squadron back then ?
