22 Meter Band HiFER Beacons / Re: 4XZ 13514 Khz
« on: May 02, 2025, 0209 UTC »
4XZ is an Israeli Navy station that sends CW on several frequencies. Broadcasts go like this: https://priyom.org/military-stations/israel/4xz

In any case, this is not one their usual frequencies, if I recall correctly. The last I knew, they weren't on any higher than 13 MHz but that might be out of date.
I suppose it could be a harmonic but 13514/2 and /3 don't work out to the frequencies that I was able to find, which, again, might be out of date.

Possibly related: I did hear someone pirating 4XZ just below 40 meters a few months ago and maybe he/she is "branching out", as it were:https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,140232.0.html

In any case, I don't know if it's really 4XZ but this should probably go in the Other or Utility sections. It's not a HiFER beacon.

I was Johnny On The Spot today. Laying in wait with a Texas SDR on my second screen, out of the corner of my eye I saw the carrier come up. The music started about 5 seconds later. SINPO 45244 / S9+10 with some fast QSB.

0005 - ID, Juno Reactor, "Mars." (Maybe) [The fading is getting very deep towards the end of this song.]
0014 - Nitzer Ebb, "Murderous." [Fading is improving.]
0018 - ID and website address, into Carl Cox, "Dr. Funk."
0031 - Audio disappearing a few times, TX on and off a few times.
0032 - Resuming.
0036 - Oh no. More audio problems. Perhaps an intermittent connection. Music resumes in a few more seconds.
0048 - "Theme from S'Express."
0054 - Indo Tribe, "Owl (I Can See You Mix)." Signal is more like S7-S9 most of the time now.
0106 - ID, The Prodigy, "Firestarter."
0124 - ID, New Order, "Confusion." Reception has improved in Texas: SINPO 54444 / S9+10 most of the time.
0151 - ID, Trans-X, "Living On Video."
0200 - Music faded down then TX off.

Hearing EDM on an SDR in Arizona. SINPO 35233 with lots of QRN tonight.

0049 - ID.
0123 - Leftfield, "Open Up." (Johnny Rotten's distinctive voice as guest vocals.)
0127 - ID, Quasar, "Take You II"
0138 - ID, The KLF, "Last Train to Trancentral."
0151 - ID, next EDM.

---> I have to leave. Good night all.

The judge's ruling:

Restores: VOA, Radio Free Asia and the Middle East Broadcasting Networks
Does not restore: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

The Office of Cuba Broadcasting (Radio y Televisión Martí) was restored already in March.

SINPO 55455 / S9 on an SDR in Texas.

0054 - Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), "Twilight."
0057 - "...will not stop, EVER!" ID, next tune is ELO, "Hold On Tight." Noticing that the QRN has all the sudden picked up.
0100 - ID at top of the hour, then Diesel, "Sausalito Summernight."
0105 - ID then The Traveling Wilburys, "Handle With Care."
0111 - Tom Petty, "Runnin' Down a Dream."
0113 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, "Into the Great Wide Open."
0116 - Fake advert for "Farmersonly.com". QRN has calmed down a little but still there.
0122 - Noting that the op seems to be doing two songs in a row from the same artist. Currently two songs from ZZTop.
0125 - Def Leppard, "Photograph."
0129 - Def Leppard, "Foolin'."
0133 - Two from Van Halen.
0141 - Styx, "Mr. Roboto."
0147 - Styx, "Blue Collar Man."
0151 - ID, Cheap Trick, "Surrender."
0155 - Cheap Trick, "Dream Police."
0207 - TX off after two song set from Pat Benetar.

36
Does it matter?

Yeah, actually it does. In the interest of honesty.

37
Since my question was deleted, I'm going to ask the question again:

How do we know that this was Boombox? No one heard an ID. How was the station name communicated to (apparently) a moderator? It's just a simple question.

I'm hearing orchestral music on an SDR in NY State. SINPO 34232 / S6.

0234 - Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire & André Cluytens, "Miroirs, M. 43: No. 4, Alborada del Gracioso"
0240 - Audio level reduced significantly.
0246 - Comedy skit about someone trying to enter through US Customs but it's hard to follow in the QRN.
0250 - Wagner, "Ride of The Valkyries".
0256 - Louis Frémaux & City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, "España."
0303 - Bill Lawrence, "Pussy Baby."
0306 - Hildegard Knef, "From Here On It Got Rough (Von nun an ging's bergab)." I switched to the K3FEF kiwi SDR in Pennsylvania for slightly less QRN.
0308 - Les Ypre Sounds, "Jericho Jerk."
0318 - Metal song.
0326 - After metal song, Male: "But...But.. You were on the brink of a great discovery!". Computerized voice saying something like "WDTF". Then carrier off.

39
Strong carrier on an SDR in NY State. Dead carrier for a minute or so then music started at 0154.
Very weak and restricted audio. What I did hear sounded like a relay of a streaming service.
More exact frequency is 6949.13 KHz, slowly drifting upward.

0204 - Pro DJ announcements with the songs he played for "Valentine's Day, 2015."
0211 - Audio is louder but still restricted. Frequency has drifted up to about 6949.20. Playing Hot Chip, "Huarache Lights."
0213 - Announcement by YL with telephone (or Dixie cup and string) audio so I missed what she said with the fading and QRN. Next tune...
0217 - "I'm DJ Liquid Todd." More mentions of Valentine's Day, 2015. Liquid Todd implies that this is a relay of Sirius XM Radio, I think.
0224 - Audio has been turned up some more. Sounding better and more fully modulated between 500 and 1500 Hz but is all middle without highs and lows. Needs an equalizer.
0229 - TX off midsong.

Equipment / Re: ATS25X2 MW breakthrough on the Tropical band
« on: April 24, 2025, 0241 UTC »
I'm glad it is working.

41
No ID yet but likely. OK reception on a Texas SDR except for plenty of QRN. SINPO 45253 / S9.

0041 - ID, next track.
0051 - "It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel fear, and it absolutely will not stop, EVER!", ID, next track.
0104 - Skindred, "Nobody."
0115 - The humming extract from a Pixies song, ID, then KMFDM, "Megalomaniac."
0124 - The House Crew, "Euphoria (Nino's Dream Remix)."
0129 - The Force Dimension, "Tension."
0135 - ID, then Aphex Twin, "Digeridoo (Cr7E Version)."
0145 - Hysterix, "Talk to Me (Sasha's Full Music Master Remix)."
0203 - The Future Sound of London, "Papua New Guinea."
0205 - Dead air then TX off.

42
0051 - "Channel Zero coming at you on shortwave" by a gurgle-y male announcer speaking painfully.

43
0007: music, seems way too strong for Liquid Radio;

and LR is usually closer to 6850 and on the low side by about 70-80 Hz, not the high side by 290 Hz.

SINPO 35343 on an SDR in the upper midwest US. QRN is, of course, an issue.

0034 - ID over bed of music.
0037 - ID, next track.
0103 - ID, next track. The band is going long and QRN is becoming more of an issue as the signal-to-noise ratio drops.
0150 - TX off.

44
0002 - Carrier off after brief announcement by OM. A bit muffled and I was concentrating on something else so I missed it.

https://www.reuters.com/legal/us-judge-blocks-trumps-shutdown-government-funded-radio-broadcasts-2025-04-22/

Quote
U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth, who is overseeing six lawsuits from employees and contractors affected by the shutdown of U.S. Agency for Global Media, ordered the administration to 'take all necessary steps' to restore employees and contractors to their positions and resume radio, television and online news broadcasts.

Quote
Congress has funded and authorized the broadcasts to provide an 'accurate, objective, and comprehensive' source of news in other nations and export the 'cardinal American values of free speech, freedom of the press, and open debate,' Lamberth wrote. Congress made the broadcasts mandatory and did not allow the executive branch to unilaterally terminate or defund them, he ruled.
