I’ve managed to catch a polytone signal (sounds a lot like ROS) on 31.325 and 31.975.

Apparently these are traffic signal (traffic light) control signals from France. Very low power.  Pretty decent catch during VHF low band opening.

258
Confirmed via the great folks at the RadioReference skip/tropospheric ducting forum - I am now able to confirm a signal that I'm hearing every time the band is open - 32.180 MHz FM with 77.0 Hz CTCSS.  Spanish language taxi dispatch lady YL dispatcher.

32.1800 MHz FM - 77.0 Hz - Alajuela, Costa Rica Taxi Dispatch - confirmed use
32.1800 MHz FM - 141.3 Hz - Alajuela, Costa Rica Taxi Dispatch - confirmed use

Also 31.2000 MHz FM - 203.5 Hz - Spanish speaking taxi dispatcher - apparently this frequency/tone/user has been logged since at least 1988.  31.200 MHz FM 203.5Hz is still active, I last heard it myself a couple days ago - the same time that 32.180 MHz was coming in very strongly and the 27.5-39.5 MHz Dedicated Fisheries Radio VHF low fishing fleet chatter out of Asia was coming in on 29.775 MHz FM, 30.300 MHz FM, 30.775 MHz FM, 30.900 MHz FM, 31.100 MHz FM, 31.800 MHz FM and other frequencies.

I did some more searching, and a lot of folks have monitored these comms, including on 29.875 MHz FM, and numerous additional frequencies in the 30-35 MHz portion especially, all with the 25 kHz channel steps, and never with a CTCSS or DCS tone/code.

259
26765 AM - 26.765 MHz AM is coming in almost daily now, same with 27755 AM - 27.755 MHz AM.  Both of these are confirmed taxi dispatch frequencies for Matamoros Mexico.

Also frequencies

26905 AM - 26.905 MHz AM - Taxi dispatch - Mexico City (Mexico, D.F.)
27765 AM - 27.765 MHz AM - Taxi dispatch - Mexico City (Mexico, D.F.)
27775 AM - 27.775 MHz AM - Taxi dispatch - Mexico City (Mexico, D.F.)
27785 AM - 27.785 MHz AM - Taxi dispatch - Mexico City (Mexico, D.F.)
27815 AM - 27.815 MHz AM - Taxi dispatch - Mexico City (Mexico, D.F.)

Among many others, I'm sure.  27.785 MHz is an interesting one, since it's only 3.75 kHz away from UK FM CB channel 19, which is 27.78125 MHz (or 27.781 MHz, or 27.781.25 MHz or 27781 FM 27781.25 FM...).  The other day I actually heard the taxi dispatch lady on 27.785 MHz AM mixing with UK FM CB signals on 27.781 MHz FM!

10/11 meters / Re: 26.540 LSB
« on: January 12, 2023, 1204 UTC »
Yessir, 26.540 MHz LSB is actually an alternate or QSY frequency for 26.555 MHz LSB.  26.555 LSB is often really really busy.

Others include 26.545 LSB, 26.560 LSB, 26.570 LSB and others.  But 26.540 MHz seems to be the most popular.

Also: 26.225 USB, 26.230 USB, 26.235 USB and of course 27.455 USB and 27.515 LSB.  26.705 AM, 26.715 AM and 27.065 AM are also very popular, next to 26.585 AM and 26.595 AM.

261
Interesting,

So the traffic you're hearing on 29.875 MHz FM is similar to what I've logged on:

29.775 MHz FM
30.000 MHz FM
30.025 MHz FM
30.100 MHz FM
30.300 MHz FM
30.775 MHz FM
30.900 MHz FM
31.100 MHz FM
31.800 MHz FM
31.900 MHz FM
32.175 MHz FM

And others, all following the 25 kHz channel steps, all without a CTCSS or DCS tone/code...

It appears to be fishery radio service, using equipment designed specifically for fleet radio communications:

25 watt power
FM voice mode and FSK data mode (to transmit GPS location)
480 channels, 25 kHz spacing
27.5 MHz to 39.475 MHz

27.500 MHz FM - Channel 1
27.525 MHz FM - Channel 2
27.550 MHz FM - Channel 3
39.475 MHz FM - Channel 480

And those are just the ones I managed to get video of.  480 channels, 27.500 to 39.475, straight sequence.  So 29.875 MHz FM is channel 100 on these radios.  Look up FT-801 Fishing Boat Radio or FT-801 Dedicated Fisheries Radio.

The bands have been alive lately and a lot of VHF low band 29.7 to 50 MHz signals have been coming in (along with 11m signals), but what sets these Asian fishery radio signals apart is the fact that they have no CTCSS (PL tone) or DCS (DPL code) selective calling signals transmitted with them.  They use regular old carrier squelch (CSQ).  99% of the land mobile (and military) comms I've heard in the 30-50 MHz band (and the 29.7 MHz to 30 MHz band) have a CTCSS tone or a DCS code transmitted, to prevent QRM from skip propagation...exactly this situation.

Yes, the 25 kHz steps do match with the standard 30.000 MHz to 87.975 MHz military FM tactical radio plan, but the military use a 150.0 Hz tone squelch system as well.  It's not one of the standard land mobile tones, but my receivers do decode it as 151.4 Hz (the closest land mobile tone to 150 Hz).  None of these fishery transmissions with the Asian language have had any tones at all, regardless of signal strength.    There are plenty of other land mobile radio systems on these frequencies (a good example is 31.200 MHz, which fits within the 25 kHz channel steps 27.500 MHz to 39.475 MHz band plan) but the traffic on there is in Spanish and has a CTCSS tone (usually I hear signals with a 203.5 Hz tone, but other tones have been logged as well, it's Latin American and Caribbean taxi cab dispatchers).

By process of elimination, I think what you heard on 29.875 MHz FM is one of these VHF Low FM "Dedicated Fisheries Radio" 27.5-39.475 MHz 480 Channel FM Fishing Boat Radio systems....or you were hearing a different land mobile system that happened to also be on 29.875 MHz.  There's actually a lot of stuff within that little piece of bandwidth between 29700 and 30000.  In the USA the frequencies 29.710 MHz, 29.730 MHz, 29.750 MHz, 29.770 MHz and 29.790 MHz are active land mobile (business radio) frequencies.  They are still used and are still active.  Of course there are freeband CB operators there, but not as many as there are below 28 MHz.

Also, here's a great example of where at least some of these guys are sourcing their gear (with music, sound effects, 35 different roger beeps, music you can play under your voice while you talk, etc).

Mr. X CB Shop

The YouTube channel is quality stuff.

https://www.youtube.com/c/MRXCBSHOP

Here's the videos list:

https://www.youtube.com/@MRXCBSHOP/videos

Lots of the radios that this shop has made for folks are in the 100 to 500+ watt output class (ones that include a large amplifier as part of the radio itself and others with an amplifier mated to the radio), such as the Galaxy DX 98VHP, DX 94HP, Superstar 158FFB4, Superstar 158EDX Ranger Long Horn N6, Stryker SR 655 and SR 955 radios, Ranger RCI-69VHP, Ranger RCI 99N4, Ranger RCI-99N2, Ranger RCI-2970DX, Ranger RCI-2970N4, the various other Magnum S9 series rigs, Connex 4600, Connex 4300, Connex CX36HPF-400 and so on.

The Ranger "Long Horn" rigs are apparently really dirty, and some CB shops refuse to sell them because of the amounts of harmonics and spurs they produce compared to the other radios on the market (including all the other radios made by Ranger - that would be: all Galaxy, Superstar, Ranger, RCI, Connex, Mirage, Texas Ranger, etc. branded radios).

These guys love using the "low channels" (frequencies below CB channel 1).  The "low band" or "band C" seems to be where they hang out the most (26.515 MHz to 26.955 MHz).

26.555 MHz LSB - Latin America SSB DX calling frequency (see also: 27.455 MHz USB) - stations will QSY from 26.555 LSB onto 26.545 MHz LSB, 26.565 MHz LSB, 26.525 MHz LSB, 26.540 MHz LSB, 26.570 MHz LSB and others.

26.515 MHz AM - I've heard taxi cab companies, US stations and lots of Latin American chatter on here
26.525 MHz AM - alternate AM frequency, also used for SSB freebanders (in LSB mode)
26.535 MHz AM - alternate AM frequency, taxi cab dispatcher (in AM mode) and SSB freebanders (in LSB mode)
26.545 MHz AM - mostly used for SSB activity (in LSB mode), but I've heard AM signals on here too
26.555 MHz LSB - Yep, very busy
26.565 MHz AM - alternate frequency
26.575 MHz AM - alternate frequency
26.585 MHz AM - big radios, big power - Mexican trucker and freebander frequency
26.595 MHz AM - alternate frequency when 26.585MHz AM is just going nuts (as it often is)
26.605 MHz AM - very popular
26.615 MHz AM
26.625 MHz AM
26.635 MHz AM - very popular with Mexican freeband CB operators and others
26.645 MHz AM
26.655 MHz AM - another popular frequency
26.665 MHz AM - I've noticed Spanish language chatter on here a lot more lately
26.675 MHz AM - US stations, Spanish language also noted
26.685 MHz AM - Spanish language, also taxi cab dispatcher YLs, also US truck drivers (identified as ABF (trucking company) use?)
26.695 MHz AM - Mexican accented Spanish, also big radios out of Florida, Puerto Rico and Caribbean area
26.705 MHz AM - BIG radios out of Puerto Rico and other areas (see also: 26.695 AM, 26.715 AM, 26.725 AM)
26.715 MHz AM - BIG radios (similar to 26.705 AM)
26.725 MHz AM - alternate to 26.705 MHz AM and 26.715 MHz AM
26.735 MHz AM - Lots of truck drivers on here, but also Latin American traffic
26.745 MHz AM - taxi cab dispatch YL (Spanish language) heard here
26.755 MHz AM - Spanish language and English speaking freebanders
26.765 MHz AM - Mexican taxi cab dispatcher, female YL dispatch lady, very strong signal at points
26.775 MHz AM - I've heard a lot of stations out of the southern USA on this frequency
26.785 MHz AM
26.795 MHz AM
26.805 MHz AM - Spanish language stations, note: this is unofficially now a FM frequency 26.805FM
26.805 MHz FM - US freeband CB operators, FM mode, very popular 26.805 FM or 805 FM club
26.815 MHz AM - US stations, mostly
26.825 MHz AM
26.835 MHz AM
26.845 MHz AM
26.855 MHz AM
26.865 MHz AM
26.875 MHz AM
26.885 MHz AM - US stations, including those that QSY'ed from 26.915 AM, etc
26.895 MHz AM
26.905 MHz AM - Known taxi dispatcher frequency, also US freebanders QSYed from 26.915 AM
26.915 MHz AM - BIG radios, commonly called "36 low" or "915"
26.925 MHz AM - Lots of different users on here
26.935 MHz AM - I've heard lots of Spanish here, also taxi dispatcher lady
26.945 MHz AM - US stations, running power, and Spanish speaking taxi cab dispatch comms
26.955 MHz AM - Taxi dispatcher (Spanish), and also lots of US freebanders

The lower channels, that is, Band A (25.615 MHz - 26.055 MHz) and Band B (26.065 MHz to 26.505 MHz) so overall

25.615 MHz up to 26.505 MHz is very popular with

Freeband SSB operators, usually clustered around 26.285 MHz USB, 26.225 MHz USB and a handful of others

Taxi cab companies (all over!)
Truckers (mostly on 25.835 MHz AM but heard all over)
Hunters, hunt club channels
Forestry, farmers, etc.  using a "clear channel"

From what I've read, many CB users in Latin America are either using:

Export radios (aka "10 meter" radios) which cover:

25.615 MHz to 30.105 MHz - the new "standard" - Chinese rigs
26.515 MHz to 27.855 MHz - "120 channel" CB rigs, usually with a "LOW/MID/HIGH" band switch (CB band is "MID")
25.615 MHz to 27.405 MHz - Hunting radios, with A-B-C-D band switch (CB band is "Band D")
26.065 MHz to 27.405 MHz - Hunting radios, with B-C-D band switch (CB band is "Band D"
25.615 MHz to 28.305 MHz - the 6-band "240 channel" A-B-C-D-E-F band standard plan (CB Band is "Band D")
25.165 MHz to 28.755 MHz - the 8-band "320 channel" band plan
24.265 MHz to 29.655 MHz - Superstar 158EDX and several other radios

Or, modified CB rigs that have had frequency expansion modifications done on them,

80 channel modification:

26.515 MHz to 27.405 MHz - channels 1-40 are the same as regular CB channels 1-40, channels 41-80 are the "low channels"
26.515 MHz to 27.855 MHz - very popular "120 channel" mod or "expansion" modification, gives the user three sets of 40 channels -  low channels (26.515 - 26.955 MHz), mid channels/CB channels (26.965 - 27.405 MHz, the standard CB band), and high channels (27.415 - 27.855 MHz).  Most of these radios also include the addition of a +10 kHz switch or a "+10kc" switch, allowing the user to access the skipped channels, LesComm, Viagra, Expo 100 and numerous other kits include kits to turn a regular 40 channel CB into a 120 channel CB.

Other kits include the addition of the "B Band" (26.065 MHz - 26.505 MHz) for a total of 120 channels, or even more coverage (for example, 25.995 MHz to 28.045 MHz, 26.005 MHz to 27.995 MHz, 26.695 MHz to 27.965 MHz, etc.

10/11 meters / 11m Band Activity 30 DEC 2022
« on: December 30, 2022, 1311 UTC »
Checking the eastern and central European SDRs this morning, along with East Coast USA SDRs, looks like Latin American chatter is already starting to pop up on the usual in-band channels.

On Polish and German SDRs, noting POCSAG pager activity on 26.500 MHz, 26.550 MHz, 26.600 MHz, 26.650 MHz, 26.695 MHz, 26.700 MHz, 26.745 MHz, 26.750 MHz, 26.800 MHz, 26.900 MHz, 26.940 MHz, 26.945 MHz, 26.950 MHz, 26.955 MHz, 27.300 MHz, 27.350 MHz, 27.450 MHz and 27.845 MHz and offset frequency 27.847 MHz / 27.848 MHz as well as 27.850 MHz.

10/11 meters / 11m Band Activity 29 DEC 2022
« on: December 29, 2022, 1325 UTC »
Noting some FM voice on 27275 (CB Channel 27) and 27295 (CB Channel 29).

Also the usual Latin American frequencies are starting to light up, including

26525 LSB 26.525 MHz LSB - alternate frequency (likely stations that QSY'ed from 26.555 LSB)
26555 LSB 26.555 MHz LSB - SSB calling (low channels)
26585 AM 26.585 MHz AM - Mexico
27065 AM 27.065 MHz AM - Very big signals (CB Channel 9)
27455 USB 27.455 MHz USB - SSB calling (high channels)

Some very faint POCSAG paging signals noted on 26.695 MHz.

The usual FSK bursts on 27.255 MHz RCRS channel / CB Channel 23

Nothing on 27.195 (yet) but I imagine the MFSK multi-frequency data signal will show up there as well.

« on: December 27, 2022, 1250 UTC »
1900 UTC, 27.383 mhz lsb. A group of knuckleheads deciding to create their own channel 2khz under .385. Creates the usual qrm wars that one might assume. The group blows off anyone complaining, of course. ;-)

That's always fun.  They're on what, 27.383 MHz LSB?

Would make more sense to use 27.380 MHz or 27.390 MHz.  During the peak of the last sunspot cycle, I regularly heard stations on 27.360 LSB, 27.370 LSB, 27.380 LSB, 27.390 LSB and 27.400 LSB (in addition to the usual 27.385 LSB and other nearby legal channels).  2 kHz isn't enough.  Sounds like they did it more to create chaos on 38LSB vs. actually to have a clear frequency.  If they can all move down to 27383 LSB, they can almost certainly move down to 27380 LSB (or up to 27390 LSB).

Whatever happened to folks just switching to the other sideband?  Every radio that has LSB mode also has USB mode.

Latin American stations coming in nicely now, especially in the legal 40 CB channels.

Lots of US stations as well.  Noted some odd data bursts on 27.195 MHz (not the usual MFSK signal that comes in when the band is open to Latin America).  Lots of data on 27.255 MHz.  Signals on all 40 of the legal channels.

10/11 meters / Re: 11m Band Activity 0942 21 DEC 2022
« on: December 21, 2022, 1148 UTC »

Still early here on the US East Coast (0645 local time, 1145 UTC).

Noting FSK data bursts on 27.255 MHz (not local) - on my local receivers.  The usual suspects (27025 AM, 27065 AM, 27085 AM, 27185 AM, 27265 AM, 27285 AM, 27385 LSB, etc.) are waking up.

Now (1600 UTC),

The UK paging frequencies (26.695 MHz, 26.745 MHz, and a couple others) are still coming in, but not nearly as strongly as before.  Noting more data signals on the legal data/RC "Class C" (Part 95C of the FCC rules) frequencies 26995, 27045, 27095, 27145 and especially 27195 and 27255.  Some FM voice on 27275 and 27125, but mostly AM.

Latin American DX now coming in nicely, taxi dispatcher on 26.765 AM is very loud, hearing more Spanish language chatter across the band, including on 26.935 AM and 26.945 AM.  Taxi dispatcher on 26.905 MHz AM mixing in with other stations.

I stand corrected:  UK FM signals still coming in on

27781 FM - UK FM CB Channel 19 - 27.781.25 MHz FM
27871 FM - UK FM CB Channel 28 - 27.871.25 MHz FM
27891 FM - UK FM CB Channel 30 - 27.891.25 MHz FM
27941 FM - UK FM CB Channel 35 - 27.941.25 MHz FM
27961 FM - UK FM CB Channel 37 - 27.961.25 MHz FM
27971 FM - UK FM CB Channel 38 - 27.971.25 MHz FM

Also a fair amount of SSB activity within the 27.6 MHz to 28.0 MHz portion (which is where the UK FM 27/81 band is), including on 27845 LSB, 27855 USB and several others.  Taxi cab dispatchers active there as well as the usual Spanish and Portuguese language SSB
