Recent logs from Downers Grove, Illinois

2018-03-10  0402  358.0  NL  Signal Hill, NL, CAN  2845 Km
2018-03-10  0002  407.0  FR  Farmingdale, NY, USA  1224 Km    New

NDBs this report 2  New NDBs 1

Another NY...  for some strange reason, NY is pretty much a black hole here.
Took me over 5 years to log the two beacons at Buffalo (204 GB,  231 BU).
Should be an easy almost straight path across the Lake to here.   ???

Nearly scored "TUT" on 403KHz in American Samoa at Pago Pago Airport this morning around 1615z, it was a border line 219-319 report at best, didn't claim it as could only get the "U" and one "T" out of the noise but not full call sign sequence, 4,478kms from here.

Many beacons in this region were "retired" during late 2016 due to GPS Navigation being implemented and thus many NDB's no longer required, around 200 went off air in Australia, a few in New Zealand and many in Papua New Guinea were withdrawn so not a lot left.

Frustrating isn't it when you can only get one or two characters of a DX call.

Some NDBs are being decommissioned here as well.  Lost several locals around here over the past couple of years.  The Canadians seem to be holding on to most of theirs...  usually hear more Canadians than U.S. from my QTH.

Nice one !
Never have heard them here, the only thing usually heard here on 198 is the NDB DIW Dixon NC.

L-G,

Same problems here with the RFI/EMI crap.  Most DXing has to be done after midnight and before dawn when the neighborhood electronic junk quiets down somewhat.

The NDBs here in the States use 1020 cycle modulation whereas the Canadians most all use 400 cycle modulation with a long Dash After ID (DAID).
What do your beacons sound like ?  My chances of ever hearing one are about nil but just curious.

Otherwise, do you couple your long antenna to the FT-2000D direct or do you use some sort of balun or unun such as 9:1 or whatever ?

Tecsun drags in too much crud and hetrodyne on low bands.

Got the Satellit 750 equivalent here.  It does a fair job on LW with a good antenna but is likely to pull in  AM broadcast band "images" and other "crud" plus it lacks narrow enough filtering and the fine tuning required for really serious LW DX.  Otherwise a nice radio for casual SWLing.

What are the details of your 310' antenna ?

It remains of unknown purpose, but related to the military.

Earliest reports in 2007 had this as being a portable NDB under test at Ft. Rucker, AL.  It seems to have moved to Ft. Eustis, VA around 2017 after a hiatus, and some do not consider this to be a portable any more.

At any rate, it counts as "another one logged" in your totals!

Thanks for the update.

Did some searching, cannot find any current NDB or NDB approach for Felker AAF @ Ft. Eustis VA.
Did find a RWY 14 NDB approach on some old obsolete approach plates that showed a 226 FAF NDB but it seems this beacon has not been heard for a while.
Just trying to figure out what kind of a beacon NEED might be @ Ft. Eustis.
Obviously too much time spent by me obsessing over this stuff.   ::)

L-G,

Did you get that stuff on the Tecsun S-2000 ?

Hey pv;

This is most likely NEED 505 in Ft. Eustis, VA.  Good catch!

OK tnx
wasn't sure if it was "I" or "EE"
NEED is an odd identifier for an aviation navaid unless this beacon is not intended for aviation
cannot find it in any aviation nav database or any of the usual NDB references.

Thanks. I'm not a big LW chaser, but I hop around the bands. The Icom 746 is desensitized below HF so I was doubly surprised. I copied a NDB down in the Cayman Islands (Cayman Brac) as well as number around the states and Canada while I was tuning around. After reading some of the other postings, I realized that Algeria is a fairly common catch

Algeria, nice one !  Difficult at my QTH due to high noise floor hr in the evening.

Yes, unfortunately many transceivers and even some general coverage receivers have less sensitivity below 160 meters.  This is done intentionally to avoid receiver overloading from strong AM BCB stations.  You can work around it somewhat by employing a better antenna specifically tailored for MW and LW and/or using an external preselector (just don't TX into the preselector  :o).

Lots of Canadian NDBs heard here right next door in Michigan (check out the "Take Off to the Great White North" thread in this forum)...  just curious, wondering which Canadians you are hearing in Texas ?

Ulli,

What type of "broadband vertical antenna" do you have?
