Oh man! I had zero signal of this one.  :'(

Definitely recognized the WLOL jingles as used to listen to this station back in the 1980's, when they didn't suck.

Signal strength is up, but as luck would have it, a big blob of noise moved in from 9450-9456.

Listening in sync-AM/LSB, the modulation still seems to be low. Hard to hear, even though the carrier is doing well.

Yes, it looks like you did. Too bad they didn't have more to say.

Last night heard San Juan (R), Portsmouth (N), Sept-Iles (C), New Orleans (G), Prescott (H), and Thunder Bay (P).

Tonight will try NW-SE and see if Bermuda comes in.

5075
Very good!

How well does it do during the night?

Haven't tried 490 here yet. Been busy with 518 and also waiting some nights for some local QRM to get out of here.

Nice map!

Haven't tried for PR yet. Was going to let it run overnight last night with the loop N-S, but there was some QRM blasting away on LW & into the lower part of MW making copying anything on 518 impossible. Pride of China.  ;D  Too funny... I'm going to steal that.

Looks like things are relatively calm for the QRM tonight, so will leave the antenna NNW-SSE and see what comes up.

So far after only a few minutes of listening, got New Orleans (G) and Prescott, ON (H) with 100%. Both are S8-S9. Although, Prescott is just down the road a piece (relatively speaking), so big deal. Wish they could send some poutine on 518.

And QRM on LW & the lower part of MW.

Meh.

Equipment / Re: Wellbrook Active Loops
« on: December 14, 2012, 0135 UTC »
Just received my ALA1530S+ last weekend. Ordered from Wellbrook on Sunday and received it the following Sat (could've had it on Fri, if I was home when the mailman brought it).

On the upper HF bands (15 MHz & 17 MHz, didn't try higher), its about the same as my 12 year old G5RV.
On 11-15 MHz, the loop is a little better.
On 9 MHz, its much better (hardly a surprise as a wet noodle does better on 9-10 MHz than a G5RV).
The lower you go, the better it gets. Can get WWV on 2500 during the day now.

On MW & LW. All I can say is that it surpassed my wildest dreams. The loop is now on the porch for the winter with a rotator. In the spring it will be sent out to the shed about 100' from the house and hopefully will get rid of a lot of stupid QRM.

Was tuning around the low end of where the LW NDBs hang out. Found a couple around 218 kHz (don't remember the freq, but it was around there somewhere) that were very strong. At first thought they were new local beacons, but they turned out to be deep in Canada straight north of here, hundreds of miles away.

Also picked up a couple of NAVTEX stations on 518 kHz over in Greenland... over 2000 miles away.

The rotator is really nice, and while not technically required, it makes things much better and would recommend that.

The only thing I regret is not getting it a year ago when I first started ogling them.

Was a busy night... Also had:
NMW Astoria, OR, USA
NMQ Cambria, USA
NMG New Orleans, USA
NMC San Francisco (Point Reyes) USA
XMJ329 Prescott, ON, CAN
A bunch of UNIDs (weak signals, probably due to the loop rejecting them).

NMW & NMC had a lot to say.

In the night, found a NAVTEX message from Greenland:

Not 100% copy, but not too shabby for nearly 2400 miles.

Think the loop was N-S. That station is 19 deg from here, so turned the loop a bit and will see what happens tonight (although the loop has a big lobe so it probably won't make too much difference).

Carrier was very weak at 0000Z and had no audio.  Watched it on & off and it came up a hair, just enough to hear Eric give an ID, then back down into the noise.

Around 0145Z, I took another look and the carrier was barely visible.
