General Radio Discussion / Re: Bluegrass music on shortwave

Shoot! I can't remember that guys name, Al. He was relayed in Europe by the guy who used to relay Laser Hot Hits for a number of years.

I actually relayed a couple of his shows Stateside in the early 2000's. I've still got the tape around somewhere.

Huh? / Re: Trolls

Says the man who didn't know what the word meant until Skip gave him the definition.

Your base ignorance never fails to amaze me, Fansome. I suggest you go to Iceland to help your fellow Trolls. If you survive, the Icelandic Trolls will see that you get a sixth grade education. They'll teach you definitions to basic terms like "Machiavellian" and "cat".

Until then stick your head in an owl burrow. The sheer quiet and cooler air will soothe your overheated brain.

BTW, check the burrow for wildlife before inserting your head. You haven't forgotten what happened when you stuck your head in that hollow stump in Punxsutawney in '97, have you?

If you'll excuse me, I have to catch the red-eye to Florence. I'm having lunch with my friend Niccolo. Ciao, Al.

Ah! That explains it. Al has the SDR Elves mixed up with the Trolls.

God only knows what he might do to garden Gnomes. He once told me he had a wrist rocket and several thousand ball bearings.

Al, Al, Al........... he who points a finger at others, points three back at himself.

Now, quit dodging the question, what is it you have against those poor Icelandic Trolls?

I thought you were posting about the massive numbers of Trolls killed and left homeless by the recent volcanic eruption in Iceland when I saw the title of this thread.  No, once again you were posting one of your "Look at me! Look at me!" threads.

Al Fansome, I'm ashamed of you. Even the gruffest of Goats are pitching in to help the poor homeless trolls before Iceland's harsh winter sets in. Won't you go to Home Depot and purchase a wooden bridge kit to house a family of Icelandic Trolls this winter?

I thank you.

I was looking at the loop but what really interested me was the homemade variometer for VLF beacon transmitting.

There's got to be a way to get a device like that to function like a tuner for the Part 15 AM guys and the short antennas they're stuck with.

There's a lot of Rumba style music in Southern Africa. Some say it was brought to the region by Cuban soldiers in the chaos that followed Portugal giving up it's African possessions in Mozambique and Angola, but I'm not so sure.

What's now Mozambique, Angola, and Tanzania were a source of slaves in the Americas until the Spanish Empire and Brazil both abolished slavery in the mid-1880's. Seeing that the average lifespan for a slave on the sugar plantations of Cuba and Brazil was roughly 18 months, many if not most of the emancipated there were African by birth and culture.

My guess is that sound came to the Americas with them, morphed, and came back a century later with the Cuban troops.

Maybe I should warn Al about the Mixer?  He's a daredevil just like his old man.

deadlier than a flock of the toughest penguins, yet my pal Al moved into the heart of burrow owl territory to be with his paramour.

However, Al keeps looking up in the trees for them, when everyone knows burrow owls live in a hole in the ground. Why do you think they call them "burrow owls?"

He hasn't been right since he started getting those pamphlets from Pueblo, Colorado.

This is going to take awhile, but here goes; A majority of people on the Zanzibar Islands don't consider themselves to be Tanzanians. It's an autonomous and rather ancient polity. Arabs, Indonesians, Indians, Persians, Chinese, Romans, and Greeks all came there to trade well before the birth of Christ.

The East African coast from the southern border of what is now Mozambique to Somalia was known as "The Land of The Zanj" which basically meant "The Land of The Blacks" from antiquity. Zanj, of course, is root word for Zanzibar. The Chinese Admiral, Zheng He, made a visit there in the early part of the 15th century with his great treasure fleet.

It was the capital of Oman for about a century, until the British were asked to step in to settle an Omani dynastic squabble there in the mid-1800's. The resulting solution was the creation of the Sultanate of Zanzibar, which lasted as a British Protectorate until the 1970's, when it merged with Tanganyika to form Tanzania.

After the merger, there was a brutal war of conquest by the Tanganyikan's on the islands that made up the former Sultanate of Zanzibar, killing and expelling much of the Indian and Arab population who had been there for centuries. It was settled by making the islands of the old Zanzibar Sultanate an autonomous region. However, there are still a lot of hard feelings in Zanzibar towards the mainland government.

To make a long story short, many Zanzibaris loathe to refer to themselves as "Tanzanians", due to recent history. I suspect that's why they leave off "Tanzania" in their broadcast id's.

Equipment / Re: I finally put up a Beverage antenna
« on: September 19, 2014, 1207 UTC »
The first time I used a BOG, Beverage On the Ground, it was so quiet I thought a static charge had taken out the front end of my receiver, lol.

Beverages shine come mid-summer when storm noise is rendering other antennas useless, IMO. They're not too shabby in winter either.

There were air traffic transmissions in the 6770 khz. region last night. I wonder if that's brought about the recent moves?

Shortwave Broadcast / Re: 4739.98 UNID Harmonic 0207 UTC 9/18/2014
« on: September 19, 2014, 1150 UTC »
I listened there about 0:30 utc last night. A lot of static here, but there was definitely something under there. Sounded like a man and woman doing a talk show or news, but I couldn't tell what the language was.

That's why I never got license, OMCS.

I've got Fansome hiding in his closet waiting for a penguin invasion as I type this. All I have to do is fire up the tx and yodel and he goes to ground.
