At 0226Z, very weak (just above the noise) on 15650. Nothing on 7475 nor 7450.

The former ERT has been shut down, but the old Voice of Greece frequencies are still active[1]. I guess they're no longer a licensed broadcaster and fall into the category of pirate or clandestine. Definition of those seems to align it toward clandestine. Don't know what they're calling the station these days, as I don't know Greek.

2310Z 15630 // 9420  YL talking in Greek
2313Z 15630 off air.
2313Z 9420 still going.  SINPO 45444. RTTY in the USB, as it frequently is.
0000Z 9420 45444 RTTY stopped at some point in the last 47 minutes. Was listening to the LSB, so I didn't have to listen to that thing.
0057 9420 45433 No more audio, dead carrier.
0100 9420 45433 In the dead carrier, heard some sounds from Windows (logging in, I think). Then more dead carrier.
0102 9420 45433 Couple of YLs talking now. They're in mid conversation when the audio came up.

[1] 15650, 15630, and 9420. I have also seen reported 9935 and 7475, but I have not heard anything there.

Yes, could call this a pirate or clandestine.

According to the HFU wiki for clandestine stations
"Clandestine refers to a radio station that broadcasts with a specific political or social agenda. Clandestine stations are generally not hobby operations like pirates. They can be well financed, and are often backed by dissident or exile groups, and sometimes by governments themselves."

Seems more fitting for the former Voice of Greece than a pirate.

I'm going to start logging over in the Clandestine section. That just seems weird, but then its a weird situation.

A jerk? Not in the least (never even entered my mind).

Can understand about the other stuff going on. 'nuff said.

Owatonna... just down the road a piece. I listen to 100.9 KOWZ from there and have for quite a while.

Where you there in the 90's? KYMN 1080 in Northfield used to transmit in AM Stereo. That sounded GREAT, esp on the Sony SRF-42. Alas, the only remaining station that I know of that transmits in C-QUAM is SW pirate X-FM (and his audio sounds GREAT too).

Had been listening to them for years and loved the Greek music.

Tuned into 15630 on the way home from work today and heard nothing, thought it was odd, but figured conditions weren't good.

Then I read the report at the BBC:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-22861577

That explained it. Recorded them last night (Central Time) on 9420 and what turns out to be one of their final transmissions.

Not really all that surprised by this, and actually, a bit surprised this didn't happen a few years ago when Greece's problems surfaced in a big way.

0025Z 9420 45444 (//15630 25432) and they're on the air with a couple of people talking (and the recorder is going again).
0118Z 9420 45444  Program ended and now dead carrier. Was a couple of guy talking for a while, then a woman was talking before no audio.
0122Z 9420 45444 Audio again. Music intro with woman talking.
0236Z 9420 45444 Program ended. Dead air again.
0241Z 9420 45444 Man talking now.
0248Z 9420 45444 Dead air is back.
0256Z 9420 45444 Music intro & woman talking again. Unsure if the same segment as before.

Kinda wish I could hear that one here, but no way ever that I could, unless they cranked the power way, way up & put a directional antenna on it.

Up here on 530 kHz, have a local TIS and at night, CIAO.

Back in the mid 80's, before I got into SW/LW radio, was tuning around on a analog car radio and found something below the AM band. One was ORC & the other at the _very_ end of the dial was RRQ. A bunch of years later I visited them again with my Sony ICF-2010. From my logbook ;), on 4/20/90 got freqs & IDs. 515 was RRQ (Rock Rapids, IA) and 521 was ORC (Orange City Municipal, IA).

My all time favorite is AA on 365 in Fargo, ND (Kenie). Been listening to that one since 1988. When I hear 'im at night, I sleep better. Even just a couple of IDs does the trick, just to know he's out there.

Tried to pick up 515, 521, and 365 on a Sangean ATS-909X now, but too light for yet. Went down to the shack and took a peek at those with the Perseus with a ALA1530S+. No problem at all. ORC & AA are still happily broadcasting, 23 years later. 515 is silent.

Looks like I need to get off my duff and start hunting the elusive Firedrake.

Sat morning UTC (Sat night Aussie time) are the Rugby/Australian Rules Football games. I listen to it, but don't understand it at all. But don't really care if I understand the game or not, its enjoyable.

You should also be able to hear Radio China in English. Kinda hard to miss them. I'm boycotting them until they bring back the Firedrake (preferably on their own freqs and not jamming others).

Radio Romania in English is on 9700 & 11955 from 0000-0100Z to the US East Coast (and works great to the upper midwest), and on 7350 & 9645 from 0300-0400Z to the US West Coast.

1230Z 45444  Sports then interrupted by the Waltzing Matilda IS at 1230Z. Did two IS, some digital modes for 7 minutes, then back to sports.

They don't normally play the Waltzing Matilda as an IS these days (at least on 9580), but they sure did back in the good ol' days. Forgot that they were doing the digital tx and when I suddenly heard the IS, a tear came to me eye.  :'(

Speaking of attrition- Heard on World of Radio #1672 today that all transmissions from Wertachtal have ceased. Additionally, WYFR is in a spiral to going off as well as they've cut a lot of their broadcasts.

The Nauen site is still going.

If the broadcasters go off the air, more spectrum for pirates?  :'(

One thing I've been doing to make logging a bit more efficient, if I log stuff here on HFU, I'll come back after a day or two and print off the log, then toss that into a 3-ring binder.

But, still logging to my old little 3-ring binder.

Also got a few R Moscow QSLs in 1989-1990 or so.... I'm sure I've been on some list for a while now.   ;D

Back in the late 80's & early 90's I did. Looked through it recently and regret I didn't log more. A bunch of stations that are long since gone - R Moscow, R Prague, WRNO (on Dec 20, 1989, they broadcast the Rolling Stones "Steel Wheels" concert from Atlantic City live), R Kiev, Radio Bras, R Sofia, Radio RSA and ones that are still around, R Havana, BBC, and R Australia. Logged an UNID on July 24, 1989 on 15360 that was playing Polka music. Whole bunch of military, maritime, MW BC, and NDBs too. Last entry was Oct 21, 1991 on 29620 FM. WI0J repeater from NH. Only two entires in 1991. Also have a bunch of stuff on VHF and higher.

Started logging again, but I need to be a bit more dedicated to doing it.
