SDR - Software Defined Radio / Re: Choosing a SDR
« on: February 13, 2015, 1529 UTC »
I am personally a fan of the RFSpace products, as I have a NetSDR that I love and has served me well for at least a year. I think given your proximity to that MW station, you'll definitely need to add additional filtering, as kcpr mentioned.

I heard this piece on NPR this morning, and thought it was kind of interesting. Click the giant "play" link on the page to hear the whole story.

Finding A 'Radio That Is Just A Radio' In The Digital Age

The United Nations has declared Friday World Radio Day in celebration of radio's unique status as a "simple and inexpensive" technology with the power to reach even the most remote, marginalized communities.

But we wondered in this digital age, how hard is it to find a simple, inexpensive radio?

Nice S9+10 signal here at 0006 UTC with Joe Jackson "Is She Really Going Out with Him?". Then a WMID ID: "is he really turning off the transmitter? yes he is" and then carrier dropped at 0008 UTC.

Nice S9 signal with Dick Weed going from playing Mogwai into giving shout-outs at 0035 UTC. Acoustic or live version of Black Metallic by Catherine Wheel at 0040 UTC which is _awesssoome_.

Tune in at 0109 UTC with Everclear (?) and then an ID by the XFM announcer. "Under the stars" and mentioned they had a rush exit from the airwaves last time. Nice S9 signal!

Radio GaGa ID at 2323 UTC and then off. Not particularly strong, maybe S2. I am listening in DSB on the SDR. There is a weird watery effect that seems to probably be propagation related. The peskies seemed to maybe make a comment or two after he went off.

Equipment / Re: Best ext antenna for a Tecsun PL-660

Some questions that might help narrow down to a solution: what kind of area do you live in? Relatively rural, suburban, urban? What do you want to hear? Loop antennas are often great solutions for radios and situations such as yours. There are all sorts of limited space antennas on the market and, aside from building one yourself to known good plans, you often get what you pay for. There are very small loops that cost a lot of money that perform really amazingly and then there's a lot of junk.

If you can't find a cable pre-made, I'd recommend sourcing the parts from Powerwerx and building it yourself. Should be a 1 beer job.

http://www.powerwerx.com

They could sell you the parts so you could either build an extension cable, or a longer replacement cable that you could wire to the innards to replace the short OEM one. Great website for radio power needs and I've bought plenty of stuff from them with happy results.

They have 6-pin male and female Molex connectors, the correct gauge DC power cable, etc.

I have it too. Wacky noises, oscillations, etc. There is some chatter that is either underneath the transmission. It seems that the noises stop briefly, occasionally, to check the presence of the chatter, and then resume. Makes me thinks this is some kind of peskies jamming peskies? We've had some high strung antics by the peskies around 6925 last winter, I think. Seems to be ramping back up. This is probably how they pass the winter on whatever port/island they hail from.
