The usual Spanish language chatter active this morning on 6900 kHz LSB 6.900 MHz LSB "The Home Channel" - freebanders on 43 meters SS OMs chatting away.  CB-like talking on 6900 LSB.

Via the Westminster, MD KiwiSDR.  Two OMs chatting away about la calle ("the street" literally).  At 2024 UTC, a third station joined in.  Seems like freebanders or maybe fishing boats.  One of the stations has some background noise.  Considerable fading.

26.915 MHz, lots of in-band frequencies, 27.390 MHz LSB, 27.425 MHz LSB, 27.475 MHz AM (then switched to LSB) and several other out of band frequencies active at 2030 UTC.  26915 AM is quite busy.  27.385 LSB/Channel 38 LSB as well as 27.025 MHz AM/Channel 6 AM going non-stop.

Too much of a coincidence that it occurred on Argentina's election day and right after the New York Times reported on US Cyber Command's installation of sit-and-wait malware in the Russian power grid (in response to the Russians doing the same thing to us for years now - cf. https://www.us-cert.gov/ncas/alerts/TA18-074A)? 

While the various governments (Argentina mostly, but also parts of Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, etc.) seem to be willing to rule out cyberattack as the reason for the massive blackout that affected more than 40 million people (!!) it seems like somebody is doing another test, proof of concept, whatever you want to call it.  Combine with the recent airnav GPS issues. 

Time to buy more solar panels, batteries, and, of course, can openers.  Also ammunition.  Battery-powered HF and VHF/UHF capability.

Would have been nice to have a before/after waterfall image for MF/HF/VHF/UHF in Buenos Aires when the lights went out.  See how much the noise floor drops (and see which broadcast stations, etc. went off the air).

This is becoming almost a daily thing now - another North American 11-meter opening this afternoon (east coast time).  Noted activity on 26.105 MHz, 26.685 MHz, 26.905 MHz, 26.915 MHz (all AM), basically every one of the legal 40 CB channels too...and several above CB band frequencies including 27.415 MHz LSB, 27.430 MHz LSB, 27.445 MHz LSB, 27.465 MHz LSB, 27.525 MHz LSB, 27.665 MHz AM (hearing some weak SSB underneath the AM chatter), 27.725 MHz AM and others...

Did some quick 11m band scanning this morning on the way to work (receiver is a Superstar 3900, older style version with Hustler IC-100 mag-mount antenna).  Noticed the usual in-band activity as well as what appeared to be semi-local two-way comms on 25.835 MHz AM (channel 19 on band A, or channel 19 down three bands on the de facto standard 6-band export frequency or channel plan).

Anyway...

Hearing some trucker communications / truck to truck chatter on 25835 AM this morning.  Talking about moving loads up to a meeting point or distribution point.  Two OMs with roger beeps.  No echo noted, but strong AM modulation and rapid fading up and down (indicating that they're moving). 


De facto standard 6 band export 11 meter (10 meter) radio channel plan.  Band D is the CB band (or the mid band 26.965 MHz to 27.405 MHz), Band C is the low band (26.515 MHz to 26.955 MHz), band E is the high band (27.415 MHz to 27.855 MHz).  Band B is the low-low band (26.065 MHz to 26.505 MHz) and Band A is the super-low band (25.615 MHz to 26.055 MHz).  So if the CB band is band D, channel 19 is 27.185 MHz, down one band is 26.735 MHz (band C), down two bands is 26.285 MHz (band B), down three bands is 25.835 MHz (band A).    This is the standard 6-band / 240 channel export radio channel plan.  Up one band would be 27.635 MHz (band E) and up to bands would be 28.085 MHz (band F).  One "band" is 0.450 MHz / 450 kHz.  Truckers love to flip the band switch up or down to find a clear frequency, instead of touching the channel knob, its easier to leave the channel setting where it is, and simply flip the band switch.  Because of this, the common trucker channels on the various A-B-C-D-E-F bands are popular places for AM activity during band openings.  Channel 19 is the obvious starting point, but channels 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 23, etc. are also popular.  I've noted trucker comms on 26.775 MHz (channel 22 down one band), 27.535 MHz (channel 11 up one band), 27.605 MHz (channel 15 up one band), but 27.615 MHz, 27.625 MHz and 27.635 MHz are all very popular (channels 17, 18 and 19 up one band).

Maybe this is the beginning of another band opening (yesterday I heard what sounded like several different business or trucking company comms on various 26 MHz frequencies in Band B (26.065 MHz to 26.505 MHz) and on the high channels (Band E), including 26.325 MHz, 26.365 MHz, 26.375 MHz, 26.405 MHz, as well as 27.585 MHz, 27.655 MHz, 27.755 MHz and 27.775 MHz, all AM mode.

Lots of activity in-band, also hearing Spanish voices coming in very strong on 26.705 MHz, 26.715 MHz and 26.725 MHz.  Likely Puerto Rico, Miami, etc.  26715 AM and 26725 booming in at 1652 UTC.

11 meters is busy late this morning, hearing lots of activity on the usual AM channels, as well as strong Spanish language activity on 26.705 MHz and 26.715 MHz

Nighttime 11 meter and CB band skip DX from 26500 up into 10 meters, almost every 10 kHz is active.  Hearing Texans chatting on 26.505 MHz AM, truckers on 27.525 MHz AM, 27.625 MHz AM, 27.635 MHz AM, 27.735 MHz AM and even 27.825 MHz AM.  Lots of AM activity below channel 1 (26.665-26.955 area especially). 26.835, 26.885, 26.905, 26.915 all very busy.  Channel 6/27.025 MHz is a total mess.  Activity on all 40 legal CB channels and every 5/10 kHz above channel 40 is active with SSB activity.  27.555 USB is, of course, also busy. 

Nighttime opening on 11 meters!

Hearing NOAA Weather Radio rebroadcast on 6933 kHz AM on the COMMSIGMA KiwiSDR on the CT/MA border.  Good signal and strong modulation.

ZZ Top's "La Grange" Coming in nice and loud on the Tecsun PL-880 this morning 1210 UTC (0810 local/0710 central time) - listening via the Westminster, MD KiwiSDR (SIO 555 on both receivers).  Can hear them with the stock telescopic whip no problem.  60 meters daytime woo

Noted some fading on 5085 kHz around 1220 UTC, checked 19 meter frequency 15810 kHz with SDR receiver while listening on the Tecsun and 15810 is beginning to come in via Westminster, MD (the Smolinski SDR) but 5085 sounds better at 1225 UTC.  Sounds like the DJs are at the Dayton Hamvention?

Hearing activity below CB channel 1 on 26.885 MHz / 26885 kHz (AM mode).  Several OM stations talking about the all-star break.  Heard a weaker station break into the QSO.  Maybe locals not realizing they're making it out into "DX land".  Lots of activity on the legal 40 CB channels, especially the usual suspects (channels 6, 11, 26 and 28).    Weak AM voice on 26.855 MHz and 26.835 MHz as well at 1135 UTC (0735 local time/eastern US time).    Strong signals on channel 31 as well (27.315 MHz AM) - talking about "The Buckeye State and wearing a mustache, among other topics.  FSK data signals noted on CB channel 23 (27.255 MHz) in addition to AM voice. 

Received via COMMSIGMA KiwiSDR on the CT/MA border.  Still listening to the chatter on 27315 AM...

Checked the radios on the lunch break - hearing some activity on 27.025 MHz (CB channel 6), 27.085 MHz (CB channel 11) and the usual 26/28 crowd (27.265 and 27.285 MHz).  Locals yakking away on 38 LSB (27.385 LSB), seem to be talking to each other vs. working DX (although they tend to do that even when the band is open...

Basically all AM activity out of the eastern half of the US, but rapid signal fading would indicate sporadic-E propagation.  Receiver is a Galaxy DX 959 (heavily modified) and a PROCOMM PBC1500 (aka JBC1500) base-loaded CB whip on the trunk lip of my car (roughly 66" long with the loading coil and the spring).  Most activity on channels 6 and 11.

Heard tons of stations in-band and lots of AM activity below channel 1, including 26.105 MHz, 26.575 MHz, 26.735 MHz, 26.775 MHz, 26.835 MHz, 26.885 MHz and 26.915 MHz (all popular low channels for AM CB DX or 11 meter AM DX).  Channel 38 LSB was also rolling in like crazy.
