HF Beacons / Re: Hikers back on the air on 8000 kHz and 7998 kHz

These are actually people hiking along trails with transmitters?

There is a very strong carrier on 6948.58 kHz. I can hear audio beneath but the carrier is completely overpowering it here. Carrier is 40 over 9 with QSB.

Note I got the time incorrect above. It's 2350Z. I'm doing conversion to UTC in my head and not used to the time change to Standard time yet.  :)

HF Beacons / Re: Update the beacon list

I wonder what happened to the OK beacon? When it was on, it was generally quite copyable in Illinois. I know these things can develop technical difficulties and I figured it just developed a power supply or circuitry problem of some sort.

Wish I'd had the chance to tune in. I got an e-mail from Rave On Radio announcing the upcoming all-request show. I hope they do this again!

Back around 1975, when I was an electrical engineering student in college, the EE department used to sponsor talks every Wednesday that would be of interest to electrical engineers. One week, they had a man who was in the NSA during the Cuban missile crisis. He talked about some info that had been declassified, so it was then OK to tell the world. What he talked about was an atmospheric phenomenon that was occurring between Florida and Cuba which caused radar signals from Florida aimed at Cuba to be deflected upward. The radar was supposed to be monitoring Cuba for missile launches, but because of the phenomenon (which they were unaware of at the time) they wouldn't have detected a launched missile until it was too late. When they finally became aware of it, they did a series of tests with aircraft in the Caribbean and figured out a way around the problem.

Another scary piece of this history.

They seem to be drifting down in frequency now. I had them tuned in on 6925.00 to start and now at 6924.91. It's not my receiver.

Just tuned in at 2350Z, to hear Twilight Zone theme, ID and then Hendrix Voodoo Chile. Good signal in central Illinois, S7 to S9.

Gone at 0036Z. Thanks Captain!

I don't hear a peep here at 0420Z. No carrier, no nothing.

Signal is fairly strong here now at 0400Z on Sept. 19. Noise is pretty bad, though. It sounds like it might be sending "W" or "P". Not sure, I can't quite pull out the CW. I've never heard this one before.

Hexie on 4096.25 is also pretty good here tonight.

Just signed on I think. There was a much weaker station on 6925 I couldn't make out but Big Boobs Radio has good signal here, 55445.

SSTV followed by Stones; Start Me Up

I haven't been able to get a good decode on their SSTV. Any idea what mode they're using?

QRT at 0343Z. Thanks for the show!

Very weak here also, QSB. This is the first time I've tuned in to it so I don't know yet what times it is detectable here. I'll have to lsiten some more ...

I think I hear pescadores up 6925.52 kHz USB now. QRN is ridiculous here but I'll take it over a tornado.

Hearing the carrier now 0050Z 8 Sept. Weak, QSB but it's in there.

I have the receiver on 6925 and have heard an occasional whistle, voices saying something, sounds like there is a conversation in the background. Just heard something like "Hey Jerry can you copy me testing 12345 - 54321." QRN level very high here, we're surrounded by severe storms.
