I have heard this type of signal for decades and I refer to it as "The Chicken." That's because of the resemblance of the sound to "buk-buk-buk-bwaaaak-buk-buk..."

I have no idea what it is trying to accomplish.

Just tuned in. Good signal in Illinois. S7 or so. ID at 1605 by Dr. Benway.

Heard a shoutout to Skeezix.

1609 Shoutout to me. Thanks Doc!

1612 10 watts? What a signal for that power level! Check out web page at
www.myspace.com/undercoverradio

1615 Talk about hooking up audio equipment to a night vision scope and pointing it at the sky, philosophizing on the sounds from the stars.. This sounds awfully familiar, like a discussion I heard by Dr. Benway many years ago in a broadcast that I think took place from Jamaica.

1720 Sign-off with shoutouts to me and everyone else posting here at HFU. Thanks again for the show Dr. Benway!

HF Beacons / 13 MHz beacons
« on: March 31, 2012, 1558 UTC »
I've been hearing various things in the vicinity of 13555. Right now I am hearing a "5 5 5" station on 13557.00 plus or minus. It's actually sending "dit ditditditdit" with a very slight pause between the first dit and the following ones, not long enough to be considered a character spacing. Bu I guess this is the "EH" beacon listed in several places.

On 13557.10 there is another ditter sending a single dit about every 10 seconds. It is drifting up and down quite a bit, varying from 13557.05 to 13557.15 kHz.

I listened for the ditters I heard a while back on 13559.83 but there are several polytone signals taking over that frequency range right now.

I don't hear it now but a few days ago I heard the "Squarer" on 13555.53. It changes frequency up and down 4 Hz every 10 seconds. It is run by Dex W4DEX.

At 2245Z the W4DEX "Squarer" is coming in quite well. That 4 Hz shift is barely detectable by ear but shows up nicely on Spectrum Lab.

I'm not hearing it approximately 150 miles to the south. I will probably be passing right by him next Saturday on my way to Wisconsin for Easter. I'll give a listen then.

Maybe it's coming from that huge tower on that building in Pilsen?

Hi N8,

First off, welcome to HFU!

What kind of a radio are you using? Antenna?

Is there anything in your vicinity you know of that might be doing an in-house transmission that just covers a building, as CM mentioned?

Can you DF the signal at all to get a direction?

I've been listening off and on to 3223 since 2300Z this evening. I haven't heard even a hint of a signal in Urbana, IL. Not even a carrier.

WWCR on 3215 is 40 over 9 or better, almost pinning my s-meter.

I could hear it for a while, 2330-2345Z. Storms in the area producing terrible QRN. Signal only about S1.

But I could hear what sounded like techno/dance beat in the background, occasionally even heard the word "dance."

Feast Of Fools (April 1) has always been a day I looked forward to for a lot of pirate operation. I imagine there will be a lot of U.S. activity, unannounced beforehand.

And how come some rabbits haven't even figured out what they are? A rabbit is not a rodent, it's a lagomorph ... only distantly related to the rodents (but then so are the monkeys).

It certainly doesn't hurt having some of the pirates mentioning HFU and giving shoutouts to people who post spottings on HFU!

Yeah, I saw that. One for $125 and another for $165 on eBay. Their advantage is they are nice and compact. I could get a couple 572B's for a lot cheaper if I wanted to build something that had more room.
