Equipment / Re: POLL: What type of antenna do you use?
« on: April 06, 2012, 1638 UTC »
I picked "small loop" because it was the closest thing to the loop I actually use. It's a full-wave 40 meter vertical rectangular loop. Dimensions are 12 ft vertical and 58 ft horizontal. It's about 4 feet off the ground. None of the choices actually fit.

If you add a category for it, I'll modify my vote.

This is most likely M51. It looks like their format. M51 sends 100 5-letter groups prefaced by a number and a time.

HF Beacons / Re: Are there any left??? I'm talkin' 8 MHz....
« on: April 06, 2012, 1622 UTC »
I've been listening there, too, and I also have not heard any of them.

It's been a poor year all around for beacons here. I can see some of the 4 MHz beacons on a spectrum waterfall but the only one I've been able to actually hear fairly well lately is the dasher on ~ 4096.57. I've occasionally heard bits and pieces of the temperature beacon. But nothing around 8 MHz.

Some of the 13 MHz beacons have been coming in fairly well lately.

Just tuned in to announcer talk. Magic Shortwave Radio ID at 0220.

He says he's feeling the magic tonight. So am I!

Decent signal 45444. Peaking S9 or better.
0226 Sounds like hip-hop music

Last night (about 0400Z March 4) I listened for a half hour or so and heard nothing. This morning (1300Z) for a half hour I hear nothing. Maybe it's gone for now or found a different frequency to use?

Interesting it seems to be louder here than in Chicago. I'm only 150 miles to the south.

It seems to be running some sort of an idling loop now. Repeating a "dit dit dit dididididit dah" pattern over and over.

It's running about S7 here now, a couple hours before sunset. Some QSB, dips down to maybe S3 and back. No DX heard on 40 meters now. So it has to be not too far away.

Well, I guess it's good to have another name for this type of transmission besides "The Chicken"! I've been hearing it for decades on various frequencies.

0230 Don't think it's Renegade Radio as signal has completely different audio quality and not as strong. 44434. Came up with song I don't recognize, no ID at start.
0234 Talk about wasn't planning a transmission until now but no ID. I think this is the station that called Renegade Radio after its transmission.
0235 Another song I don't know
0240 More talk, doesn't feel the magic tonight, ID Magic Shortwave Radio. Signal is quite good and copyable here and I'm sure that was given as an ID.
0246 Wrap-up and off.

Thanks Magic Shortwave Radio! I hope you're feeling more of the magic next time.
